Smoke coming from an elevator at UR Medicine Jones Memorial Hospital on Main Street in Wellsville was visible from the roof and was starting to spread in the building.
Maintenance staff at the hospital quickly shut down the elevator which almost instantly stopped the smoke issue. No injuries were reported and despite the heavy presence of first responders and fire trucks, patient services were not affected.
Trucks from the Wellsville Volunteer Fire Department were in three spots as firefighters went into make sure the smoke was gone. The Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps were also on the scene.
“A motor burned up in one of the elevators and it put smoke in the building,” said Wellsville Fire Department Chief Greg Day. “There was no fire and no threat to patients.”

Day said the staff made a difference.
“They knew what was wrong when we arrived, we just helped with removing the smoke. We did not deploy any water lines,” Day said. “There was no visible smoke coming out, the maintenance department already had it shut off.”
