An eye-opening experience for Franciscan University student

In June 2025, HomeCare & Hospice welcomed Margaret McAuley, a senior English major at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, as a summer intern. During her time with the organization, Margaret has not only gained valuable experience but also a deep appreciation for the care provided by HomeCare & Hospice and its sister organization, Total Senior Care.
“Before starting my internship, I knew very little about either organization,” she shared. “But over the past few weeks, I’ve come to see just how vital these services are to our community.”
HomeCare & Hospice provides home care, hospice, and palliative care across Allegany, Cattaraugus, Genesee, and Wyoming counties. The organization prioritizes quality of life—helping elderly, disabled, or chronically ill individuals remain at home with dignity and independence while receiving the care they need. Patients are supported through every stage, with services including spiritual care and bereavement counseling for families.
“We know we are entering people’s lives during difficult times,” said Melissa Sullivan, Chief Operating Officer of HomeCare & Hospice and Total Senior Care. “Our goal is always to ensure the patient and family have the care and support they need.”
Total Senior Care focuses on long-term healthcare plans for individuals 55 and older living in Cattaraugus, Allegany, or Chautauqua counties. The Care Team works with each individual to assess their needs and connect them to appropriate services—allowing them to continue living safely at home. The program also offers Daybreak, a popular social program at the PACE center in Olean, where participants enjoy activities, meals, and companionship in a safe, welcoming space.
“It’s an incredibly popular program,” said Roxanne Padlo, Executive Program Director of Total Senior Care. “We have many seniors who attend two to three days a week—and they all really enjoy it.”
