The Hunter Tapestry was recovered by US Forces in 1945
From the Eldred WWII Museum
Eldred, PA – The Eldred WWII Museum recently acquired on loan a tapestry that once hung in the dining room of Heinrich Himmler’s lake house in Tegernsee, Germany.
The Jager tapestry(Hunter Tapestry) is now on display in the museum, along with the story of how and when a soldier of the 636th Tank Division acquired it in May 1945.
Through research and information from several military sites and a collectors’ organization (which had personal contact with the designer of the tapestry before he passed away), we were able to authenticate the tapestry’s legitimacy.
Our goal at the Eldred WWII Museum has always been to educate and tell the stories of veterans and individuals who experienced WWII and all it encompassed.
This new and rare artifact adds a visual dimension to the stories of WWII veterans that are told throughout the Eldred WWII Museum’s displays. We are excited to have this artifact in our museum.
