OP-ED: Congressman Langworthy has abdicated his responsibilities to NY-23

“Nick Langworthy needs a challenger in a Republican primary”

An OPINION by Jim King, Owego NY

Nick Langworthy has abdicated his responsibilities as Congressman.  A Congressman has three public responsibilities.  In priority order:

  1. Honor his oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution against all enemies
  2. Truly understand and fairly represent the sentiments of the majority of his constituents
  3. Support the platform of his party, or at least fulfill his own campaign promises.

The services his office provides, the committees and caucuses he is a member of, the public pronouncements he makes, all should reflect his priorities.

What do Langworthy’s participation in committees and caucuses, and his public pronouncements tell us?  Langworthy’s priorities include none of the above.  Nick Langwothy’s only priority is getting re-elected.  Politician is the only job he knows.  He is afraid of a primary, because he thinks his seat is otherwise safe.  So, he panders to the “apostles of greed”.

Langworthy is ignoring his duty and campaign promise regarding the House of Representatives’ obligation to fiscal responsibility.  His recent yes vote for the “Big Beautiful Bill” abandons fiscal conservative values.  Not only does it saddle our children with unnecessary and crippling debt, it compromises the welfare of his constituents.  As an example, about 4 in 25 homes in the 23rd District receive SNAP benefits.  (SNAP is legislated under the Agriculture Committee on which Langworthy sits.).  SNAP is being cut.  Children (30%), elderly (21%), disabled (10%), other working poor (39%) will l go hungry.  The benefits of SNAP extend beyond those fed.  Every SNAP $1, generates $1.54 in economic activity.  Not discussed is how the B-B-B significantly compromises the healthcare of even more constituents.  Langworthy brags about his vote.

Langworthy has abandoned congressional oversight of the executive branch.  I hear no calls from Langworthy regarding investigation of the grift reported by left and right mainstream media.  I hear no calls from Langworthy regarding executive activities found to be illegal in the Federal courts.  Congress is supposed to watch and check the Executive.  On the contrary, Langworthy praises these executive actions and chastises the Courts.

Langworthy refuses to listen to his constituents face-to-face.  He calls in-person townhall meetings a charade.  Instead, he hosts scripted telephone interviews.

Nick Langworthy needs a challenger in a Republican primary.  The Republican establishment is reluctant to put a MAGA incumbent against a new comer.  Passing ballot petitions for the new comer may take a grass roots effort next March.   Until a better District 23 candidate is found, I will be asking for help getting 1,250 valid registered Republican signatures.
