From the TRGHS,
. The Nathaniel Dike Museum, located at 118 East Dyke St. in the Village will be opening for the 2025 season Wednesday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
The museum, the only one in the village, is the home of genealogical files, historical data and displays and memorabilia from Wellsville’s distant and recent past.
Founded in 1857, the village was in existence nearly 50 years before it was officially named. The museum is named after the area’s first white settler, Nathaniel Dike who came here with his family in 1795 and settled in Elm Valley, on the banks of the creek that bears his name.
Wellsville was named after Gardner Wells, the largest landowner at the time, who failed to attend the naming meeting in the Van Buren Tavern.
Find out more in the archives at the museum, where you can see photos showing how the village has changed over the years.
The museum is open on Wednesdays from 1:00 to 4:00 PM through October 31st. Appointments may be made for visits on other days by calling 585.-593-6124. We’d love to show you or your club or reunion group around and answer your questions. So come on down and see what the Nathaniel Dike Museum has to offer. Admission is free.
