“585 Owners Unite” will meet again on May 7 in Wellsville
By Andrew Harris
Property owners in the Town of Wellsville have been given good reason to be concerned about the recent re-assessments by the Town of Wellsville. Many properties were notified of dramatic increases in assessed value which will translate into tax increases. The Town of Wellsville Assessor conducted the property re-assessments and property owners received notifications in late February 2025.
From 585OwnersUnited.com:
“On April 23 we had our first meeting at the David A Howe Library to discuss options for us moving forward. Our first option is to contest our property tax assessment with the Town. In order to do so, you must file a Grievance with the Town and that must be delivered to the Town Assessor by May 27th.”
One of the commercial property owners, Marshall Green, reported that two of this Main Street Wellsville properties suddenly doubled in value. Green had this to say:
“No way are we against reasonable increases in property values. It’s overtime and that’s normally the case. However in this case, it all seems very arbitrary and nonsensical. With many properties doubling or even tripling in value when there is no way the market would actually bear those prices.”
The next meeting will be held at the David A. Howe Library on May 7 at 6pm. All property owners are welcome to attend and may sign up for email updates by visiting 585OwnersUnited.com.
According to the website, the group is considering a group legal challenge to the Town of Wellsville. A group of property owners succeeded in overturning tax assessments in the Town of Cuba last year.
For those property owners who are not interested in joining the group, they can contact the Assessor directly. To file a grievance, you can contact the Assessor, Joe Dannheim at 585-593-1780 Ext. 6 or by email to sharedassessor@gmail.com
