CEO Brad Whitford: “The biggest beam we have ever built”

By Andrew Harris

Wellsville NY based construction firm L.C Whitword is known for building big, specializing in bridge construction and repair all over the east coast of the country. You’ve probably witnessed some of the “oversized loads,” of massive beams leaving their Bolivar Road facility, destined for projects hundreds of miles away.

This morning, the family business is full of pride after shipping out the largest steel bridge beam in company history. The massive oversized load left Wellsville for downtown Binghamton where L.C. Whitford is replacing a notable railroad bridge.

The beams setting on the ground are 8’6”, 26” wide and 114’ long approximately 55 ton each setting on the truck we scale out at 153500 pounds 133’ long and 14’2” tall.

The bridge, built in 1912, made national news after a rail derailed in downtown Binghamton in 2023. While the accident was without any serious casualties or damages, it highlighted the serious deficiencies of the Front Street bridge.

LC Whitford came to town after a successful bid on the project. Much of the decaying beams were removed earlier this week and crews will start installing the replacements this week.

Patriarch of the L.C Whitford Company, Chan Whitford was “beaming” with pride when we talked to him about the big job:

“It is nice to have this size job, $4.7 million dollar job, so close to home. Rob Faulkner and his team did an amazing job and the entire company is very proud of this work.”

Local media outlet WNBF has reported on the project which includes some video of the work
