A great time at Cartwrights, Back River Rogue Road, gutter talk
By Chuck Wiser, I write the words to share what my eyes see and my heart feels
Over the weekend I added an extra Wrambling to add a couple of items that I hadn’t yet mentioned, but that would occur before my normal posting day, as this one is. The subject of Veteran’s benefits has come to awareness through a couple of opportunities so I thought I would expound upon them a little bit more.
First, there will be a wrap up of the recently held PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Peer Support Program held at Cartwrights Maple Tree Inn in Canaseraga, NY. Nearly 60 veterans, families or guests enjoyed a delicious pancake breakfast March 4th, and the timing couldn’t have been better as the sun came out warming the air to what may well have been the first day warm enough for maple sap to be running.
This program and others scheduled for the near future are highlighted on the Facebook page, “Salute to Allegany County Veterans.”
This program was the third one that I’ve had the privilege of attending, facilitated by having been enlisted in the US Navy in the early 60’s. There are numerous other benefits available to Veterans but sadly they are not always publicly advertised until Veteran’s Day which will be on Tuesday November 11th this year. I accidently discovered that a Veteran’s discount was available all of the time at our local Auto Zone store when I made a recent purchase there. Discounts ranging from 5% to 30% are also available at such stores or places as: Lowes, Home Depot, Bass Pro, Kohl’s and Big Lots to name a few. Unbeknownst to me, and for which I am now kicking myself, is the discount of up to 30% offered by Samsung if you order online. My phone purchased a few months ago would have earned that discount if I had known about it at the time.
My message to fellow Veterans is to check out where you might receive these benefits before you make a significant purchase. The availability of Veteran’s discounts especially increases greatly on Veteran’s Day but they are often available at many other retail facilities.
I am confuzzled by the lack of warning signs in a very conspicuous place notable (and visible every day) to me. For much of the summer and continuing even as “we speak” is the installation of large diameter pipes in the Scio area. Much of the construction is going on as you start down the Back River Road (AKA: Back River Road Raceway) coming off County Rte. 31, by and across from, the Buckley Storage Rentals. I can’t verify that they were missing elsewhere as I didn’t pay that much attention, but I know that “Men Working” or “Work Zone” were NOT posted on my road. The actual work, with only a few exceptions was not going on in the road, but directly adjacent to it. The construction also is going on up toward the Town of Scio and for a short distance headed out Knights Creek Road (Cty. Rte. 9) toward Allentown which is an extension of River Street. I’m not sure if any warning signs are posted up there or not. But none on my road.
As a “wanna-be” singer and a “pretend” writer, I often compose song lyrics and even dabble in modifications and verse additions to other already published songs. The “Look Beyond Tomorrow” song, from which I posted a YouTube link in my extra Wrambling last weekend, is an example. I recently composed a modified version of the Jim Reeves song How Long Has it Been, and gave a copy to George Johnson who leads the Praise Band which is a part of every weeks service at the Grace United Church in Wellsville. I was humbled and tremendously honored when he said to me last week: “Thank you for your talent and your heart.” My words don’t come from my head, they come from my eyes and my heart as I note in my comment beneath the Wrambling title.

This picture shows a small section of Leaf Guard eaves trough covers which were installed last summer to prevent leaf accumulations in the “Gutters” on our house and garage, The “idea” is that the water will flow freely into the gutter through the cutout openings but leaves and debris wouldn’t. It cost me a “few” dollars to have them installed, some by me and some by a contractor. Not visible in this picture is a small opening mesh screen on the inside of these guards. THEY DO/DID, NOT WORK. Oh, they kept the leaves out just fine. But they also didn’t let the rain shedding go into these fully. With these installed, the rain would back up some and find its outlet by leaking and dripping between this cover and the roof “fascia” to which the gutters were attached. The other day I took them all down. At the time these were installed I didn’t notice (or appreciate) that the fine mesh inside of these does not let water flow in freely. Now I guess, to try and recoup a little of my value I think I will remove the fine mesh screen and re-install these. Or not! My wife doesn’t think I should get up on the ladder with my knees and back in the shape they are in. I will have to give this a little more thought.

When we moved to Scio and The Back River Road this was a nice little quiet country road. Over the past several years the peace and tranquility have eroded more and more each year.
Beep. Beep. Beep, and the startling loud bang of a dump truck tailgate closing is hard to get out of your head. This latest expansion of the gravel storage “gravel pit” is likely for an upcoming road or construction project. Summer doesn’t look like it is going to be tranquil. I guess the cars that fly by here at 70+ Miles per hour won’t be bothered much by this. It will however, cut down on the “donut spinning” in the formerly open lot.
I will now sign off and go play in traffic…he said sarcastically. Please feel to contact me via IM.Wiserdad@gmail.com with any questions, cares or concerns about these writings. Be Safe!
