Letter to the Editor: Thank you for Community Action Angels

Kids of all ages had Christmas thanks to the “Angels”

ACCORD staff and volunteers would like to offer their sincere thanks to the many donors who made it possible to provide Christmas gifts to 320 children in December 2024.

ACCORD’s Community Action Angels Program relies on community support to help make Christmas a bit brighter for economically challenged families living in Allegany County. In December 2024, we received an incredible number of toys and monetary donations to provide toys to 171 children aged 9 and under, and gift cards to 149 children aged 10-18 years. This program would not be possible without community support.

Families who seek support from the program have shared with staff that they feel incredibly frustrated because “it seems impossible to get ahead.” One single dad who received gift cards for his children works and attends college. He simply didn’t have the financial resources for added expenses on an already tight budget. Another family with 6 children said they applied to the gift program to keep their family’s Christmas traditions alive. They were “so relieved” that they qualified for help, because “at least the kids will have something under the tree.”

We are proud and grateful to live in a community that never hesitates to help a family in need. The various groups, businesses and individuals that support us year after year give us the opportunity to get the program rolling and when we are running short, people respond, so we help a few more.  Staff and volunteers work for months to assure we have systems and resources set up to serve as many children as possible. They do a phenomenal job. It really takes a community.

The Community Action Angels Program assists families where other programs do not exist or when a family does not qualify for a program but needs help.
