Community recycling can lead to community assets like new park benches!

From the David A. Howe,

The David A. Howe Public Library is participating in the “NexTrex Challenge” is a recycling program run by the company Trex. This is a recycling program where schools, organizations, and communities collect plastic film (like grocery bags) and turn it in to earn rewards like high-performance composite benches, essentially encouraging responsible plastic film recycling on a larger scale. “NexTrex” is essentially the brand name for Trex’s plastic film recycling initiative.

The challenge primarily focuses on collecting plastic film materials like grocery bags, wraps, and packaging. The library participates by setting up a collection bin and encouraging the community to recycle their plastic film. The plastic will be tracked, weighed, and dropped off at a local collection center. The library’s goal is to collect 1,000 lbs. of plastic film by January 2, 2026, while raising awareness about the importance of plastic film recycling and responsible waste management.

The collection bin is located in the library’s foyer near the front door, and community members are welcome to drop off their clean, dry plastic film during our operating hours. For questions, please call the library at (585) 593-3410 or email: wellsville@stls.org.
