The Rushford Free Library and the Library Wide Awake Club of Fillmore recently became the recipients of the book Forest Faces of Moss Lake by Ruth Metcalf. Mrs. Metcalf, a member of the Town of Rushford community since 1948 when she moved to the area as a child, was inspired to write this children’s book by her love for the nature preserve and for her grandchildren.
The donation of 35 copies of the book to each library was made possible by the generosity of Barbara and Diane Ryan. As summer residents of Rushford Lake for more than 65 years, the sisters developed an early appreciation of this hidden gem through their parents, Eleanor and Floyd Ryan. The Ryans are hoping that children of Rushford and Fillmore who spend time at Moss Lake with family and friends will stop by their library to pick up their own copy to add to their family libraries.
Moss Lake Preserve, located in the town of Caneadea, is a 15-acre bog lake formed thousands of years ago when the last continental glacier melted, leaving a water-filled depression that eventually became covered with a mat of sphagnum moss. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1973 by the Department of the Interior and it is owned by The Nature Conservancy.
