Susan Doran, an artist in the 2024 Rural and Traditional Arts Fellowship, spent this summer traveling throughout Allegany County to present The Lost Art of Sentimental Hairwork. In her presentations, Doran explored the history and techniques of this unique Victorian-era craft, where intricately braided and twisted human hair was used to create decorative wreaths, often featuring elaborate floral designs.

Doran’s latest creation, the Community Unity Wreath, was crafted using hair donated by residents of Allegany County. Each lock represents an individual, coming together to form a symbol of the community’s strength and connection.

The public is invited to view the completed wreath at the Genesee Country Village & Museum on November 2 during a gallery talk at 1 p.m.

Gallery talks are held in the lobby of the John L. Wehle Gallery and are included with general museum admission.
