Brian Oglesbee has a studio in Wellsville, art on exhibit in China
From Doris MacFarquhar, Monday Club Publicist
“My Journey as a Photographer” was the program shared by Alfred Professor and creative photographer Brian Oglesbee, October 7, for the Monday Club of Wellsville. He illustrated his work with power point, showing black and white and color photographs created over years from high school to recent times.
He credited four years of high school photography classes for giving him an unusually good start, with additional work at the Institute of Design and Art Institute of Chicago, street photography, and commercial work. His skill, interests, and creativity continually evolved.
Arriving to teach at Alfred University, he continued experimenting, and producing new work, with more art shots, using a large “bellows type” camera, working with flowers, fruit, and other objects. The prints are very large, and required special care to exhibit. He moved his studio to the upper floors of the Art Center in Wellsville. At times his work has been primarily color photography, other times black and white. Oglesbee began working with waterscapes in the 90’s, and the Water Series was magical, the results quite unusual and mysterious. In 2007, he published “Aquatique”, a collection of the water photos .(The book is available at the David A. Howe Library.)
Since the 1980’s his works have been exhibited at well known museums, such as the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, the Eastman House, the Brooklyn Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and in public and private collections. His work influenced movie productions by Julie Taymore (Lion King, The Tempest) and Dame Helen Mirren,(The Tempest). The mother of an Alfred student requested 50 of his large prints to be transported to exhibit in Wuhan, China, a challenging request that was fulfilled. “Journey as a Photographer” challenged and encouraged seeing photos in a new way.
