Have you pondered some of these local topics lately ?
By Dennis Shutt, Wellsville
I attended Wellsville School Board meeting. One question was asked where, if any, excess money would go, after the 3 million dollar concession stand was built. Reply was: “Don’t worry, we will spend it all, we always do”. After a few chuckles, we were informed it would go in the general fund. To go along with that the district gives raises while people are still on probation. I was the person. I went to the district and told them that not only did I not ask for a raise, I did not want it. I was a tax payer and I had never heard of someone on probation getting a raise. They informed me it was in our union contract. I asked them whom the dummy was that agreed to that. I’m sure glad the new board are asking questions. I hope they will continue to ask these type of important questions. Just wondering.
Speaking of expenses, I’ve been wondering how much the new Wellsville town facility is costing. I know there was the number we voted on, but with the inflation over the years it has taken to erect it to this point, the cost, must have gone up. Someone should ask the school about the concession stand and that was a small time lapse, compared to the highway building. Just wondering and if the cost hasn’t gone up, maybe the school should check with the cost purchasers that the town uses. If it has gone up, where is the money coming from? Just wondering.
Our county legislatures voted themselves raises, because their pay was too low. I agree, but we have too many legislatures and now they are over paid, per person, they were elected by. Just compare it to any county you choose. Use the formula: People per county, divided by number of legislators. Then divide that answer into amount each legislator is paid. That answer will tell you how much each legislator gets per person they are representing. I’ve written on this subject before, just trying to get my head wrapped around the fact that government seems to think we all failed math. Still wondering.
Speaking of math, how about our property reval. You remember, the one that insures our town will not RAISE the tax rate. They will be heroes, just like the school never RAISES the tax rate. It seems to always cost us, but it is not because of a tax rate increase. It is because they raise the value of our property and for those that were looking to sell, that is a great thing. For keeping people around here, we will see. Just wondering.
Even our federal government uses this math. Raise minimum wage. Awesome thought. Now every business owner will raise his cost to you, for products or services. So the raise you got, you just give it back with purchases. Now the feds don’t raise tax rates either, they just keep more money from your working wage. They get to keep more of your money which gives them a raise. I never did understand this new math, but it may be coming clear. Just wondering.
Don’t litter, but the Amish don’t have poop bags on their horses when traveling inside village. Just wondering.
Try not to burn wood for heat, as your neighbors might not like the smell of the smoke. Then why can you drive around our town and smell weed smoke. No, not the kind of burning grass. Well, yes it really is burning grass. Just wondering.
Anybody take the back road thru Bolivar? Goes behind the school instead of in front of it. I received a ticket there, as I found out, after traveling it for 14 years, you can go 40mph if heading west. It is only 25mph if heading east. Check it out, but be careful. Went that way last week to verify the signs. Yep, still the same. Just wondering.
We have all heard the words eminent domain lately. First it was for the cheese factory that is now being built in Franklinville. Recently about Super Duper parking lot(Wellsville Municipal Parking Lot.) Did you know the east half of the Wellsville Airport was taken under the same eminent domain law? It has been used before, as Mr. Spock said, “the needs of the many out weight the needs of the few’. Just wondering.
I am sure I have left you plenty to wonder about and will get off my soap box. Hope you ponder some of these thoughts, as I have. I am sure the people that I am asking about, will have all the answers but when they are done explaining them, I will still be left wondering. Have a great day and a better tomorrow.
