Put Bull’s Eye Saloon & Axe Throwing in Hornell on your must-do list!
By Tammy McQueen Kokot
My job entails spending hours behind the wheel of a car five days a week. By the end of the week, my body feels like “mush”. Usually I go right home and climb into my pj’s, and I’m not long for my bed. This past weekend, on my way home one evening, I decided to stop in to check out Bull’s Eye Saloon & Axe Throwing, located at 752 St. Rt. 21 in Hornellsville.
I’d been meaning to stop, but usually I beelined for home. I ordered a drink and chatted with one of the co-owners, Cheri Drake. It was relatively quiet, so I decided to give axe throwing a try and move some muscles and get the blood flowing. Cheri very kindly offered to introduce me to the world of axe throwing. After five minutes in which she covered safety measures to adhere to (CLOSED TOE SHOES ARE A MUST), basic throwing form/stance, and a quick review on the variety of targets that are available, she deemed me ready to get started.
The axe throwing started with a 30-minute session (plus five minutes for instruction). I could add more time in 30-minute increments, if I felt so inclined. My first throw was a dud (bounced off and hit the floor (Cheri told me that this is normal). My second stuck, and for the most part, all of my throws stayed. For each frame (a total of 10), one earns points depending on where the ax lands on the target, and there are a variety of them. I like the one that after each recorded throw, the bull’s eye shifts to a different location. Keeping score for yourself isn’t the best, so having a friend come along and take turns throwing and recording the points.
I threw long enough that I figured that I’d be feeling it the next morning. I broke a good (satisfying) sweat. The whole session was satisfying and even liberating, but most of all…it was FUN! So much so that I returned the next evening, and had an amazing score my first game.
I encourage folks of all ages to give axe throwing a try. But if throwing sharp objects isn’t your thing, there’s a myriad of other activities, some of which are free…such as corn hole, badminton, foosball, and ladder ball. Darts and pool are coin operated.
