The Witch Doctor of Steuben: Unraveling the Enigma of Dr. Daniel Roberts and the Ghost of Starr Hill

By: Johanna Elattar

Amidst the lush greenery of Steuben, an enigmatic tale unfolds—the story of Dr. Daniel Roberts, a figure whose life and legacy perpetually captivate both locals and visitors. His presence, shrouded in both historical fact and whispered legend, creates an enduring mystery that resonates through the generations.

Born in Caernarvonshire, Wales, Dr. Daniel Roberts ventured across the Atlantic in the early 1800s, drawn by the promise of the New World and the opportunities it held. Settling in Steuben on Starr Hill, he brought with him not only his medical expertise but also a reputation that preceded him — a reputation intertwined with whispers of the supernatural and the inexplicable.

Dr. Roberts, educated at Lampeter School in Wales, was not merely a conventional physician; he was a practitioner of what some today might call holistic medicine. He blended traditional healing methods with what was then considered unconventional practices, including mesmerism and herbal remedies. His extensive knowledge was augmented by his wife Jane, who was known to assist him in brewing potent remedies and aiding the afflicted who sought their help. Together, they formed a formidable team dedicated to healing and wellness.

Yet, amidst their healing endeavors, the couple found themselves enveloped in the superstitions and folklore of their time. Welsh immigrants, steeped in their own cultural beliefs, quickly branded Dr. Roberts a Witch Doctor, attributing to him powers that transcended the mundane. Tales abounded of his ability to foresee the future, heal the gravely ill with mysterious potions, and even, according to some accounts, paralyze with a mere utterance. These stories painted a picture of a man who straddled the line between science and sorcery, a figure of both reverence and fear.

Despite the ominous moniker, Dr. Roberts neither confirmed nor denied the rumors surrounding him and Jane. Instead, their reticence and the mysterious nature of their work fueled the growth of legends that continue to echo through the generations. Even today, whispers linger of the shadowy figure of Dr. Roberts, said to roam Starr Hill Road under the cover of night, a lantern casting an ethereal glow upon his path. This spectral presence is often described as a tall, elderly man with a flowing beard, his eyes glinting with an otherworldly light as he moves silently through the darkness.

Tragedy struck in 1820 when Dr. Roberts met his untimely end. Returning from attending to a sick child, his horse spooked, throwing him from its back near Starr Hill. Despite efforts by a nearby farmer to bring him home, Dr. Roberts succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a legacy that would endure beyond the grave. Jane, undeterred by her husband’s passing, carried on their healing practice until her own death, shrouded in the mystery of a cauldron brewing in the yard as she departed this world. Her death added another layer to the legend, with some claiming she joined her husband in the spectral realm, continuing their work from beyond.

Today, Starr Hill Road remains a focal point of intrigue for locals and intrepid visitors alike. Reports persist of a spectral light that dances through the fields, and sightings of an elderly figure, adorned with a lengthy beard, carrying a lantern as he traverses the road at dusk. Legend holds that this apparition is none other than Dr. Daniel Roberts himself, the Witch Doctor of Steuben, ever vigilant and ready to aid those in need, particularly on stormy nights when darkness and desperation descend upon the countryside.

As the sun sets over Starr Hill, casting long shadows across the landscape, the enigma of Dr. Daniel Roberts endures. His story is a testament to a bygone era where medicine and magic intertwined, leaving an indelible mark on the tapestry of local folklore and the hearts of those who dare to believe in the mysteries that lie just beyond the veil of reality. The legacy of Dr. Roberts, with its blend of historical truth and supernatural lore, continues to captivate, inviting all who hear his story to ponder the thin line between the known and the unknown.
