According to law enforcement searching on Thursday night, a 16-year-old boy went missing while swimming with friends in the Genesee River.
The search earned early Friday and recovery efforts will begin when there is light.
This is a statement from the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office:
Last evening, the Allegany County E911 Communications Center received a call of a swimmer that had not resurfaced in the Genesee River near Oramel.
Several area Fire, EMS, Law Enforcement agencies including the New York State Police Underwater Dive Team, Allegany County Drone Team, as well as the resources of the Allegany County Office of Emergency Services responded and were involved in this reported drowning incident.
Unfortunately, after hours of searching without success, this is now being transitioned to a recovery effort.
The recovery is being called off for tonight. This is still an active scene.
Please, do not try to walk, drive, or enter the area. Law Enforcement, Fire and EMS will re-engage in recovery efforts in the morning.
Belfast school will have counselors available.
