Events June 22 in Batavia and July 13 in Niagara

From the WNYGS,

In observance of their 50th Anniversary the Western New York Genealogical Society is planning two events that will be of interest to many people in the eight county region.

The first event, Saturday June 22, will be at Batavia, NY for a presentation of “Birthplace and Crossroads of Western New York”.  The events begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Holland Land Office Museum (HLOM) at 11 W. Main Street in Batavia where participants will be welcomed and have a tour of the museum.

A buffet lunch at noon will be followed by two sessions by speaker Kaitlyn Pauley. Ms Pauley, a graduate of Brigham Young University, is head researcher at Pauley Genealogical Services at Clarksburg, West Virginia and has over fifteen years of genealogical experience.

The  first session will explore the Western NY wilderness of the 1800s as experienced by early settlers, tracing their steps, and discovering the motivations, origins, and routes that led them to the region in search of a better life. Session two will be about exploring maps and their use in genealogy.  Participants will discuss how to use five key maps to learn more about your ancestors and where they lived.

The cost for the daylong event includes HLOM admission with talk and tour; morning coffee and snack, and the buffet lunch with guest speakers.  Door prizes will be awarded.

For more information or to register, go the WNYGS.ORG or call Marie Tidwell at 716-472-0063.

On Saturday, July 13,  there will be a “Save our Cemeteries” workshop in Niagara County. The morning session begins with registration at the Calvin K. Richards Community Center, Town of Niagara, from 9 to 10. There will be presentations on cemetery research and the importance of volunteerism. Representatives from the NY State division of Cemeteries will be available to answer questions.  In the afternoon there will be a tour, highlighting restoration efforts at the historic Witmer Cemetery at the corner of Witmer Road and Pennsylvania Ave.  Other sessions include a demonstration of proper methods to clean headstones: a discussion by Cornell Cooperative Extension on combatting invasive species; and a local mason will talk about repairing and resetting grave markers.

To register or get more information on the Cemeteries Workshop call Pete Ames at 716-297-4429 or visit WNYGS.ORG.

The WNY Genealogical Society serves members thru out the eight counties of Western New York including Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Wyoming, Genesee, Orleans, and Niagara.
