Letter to the Editor: Former Wellsville school clerk asks voters to choose carefully on May 21

“I am respectfully asking that you please educate yourself on the candidates that are running”

By Dawn Youmans, Wellsville

As you may or may not know, I was employed by the Wellsville Central School District for 25 years, 20+ of those years I was the District Clerk. During my tenure as District Clerk, I attended meetings at the local, regional and state level.

During this time, networking with other District Clerks was very beneficial. One of the main things that I observed during these years is that School Districts that have divided Board of Educations have many issues. They are the Districts that have a difficult time agreeing on a budget, solving difficult situations, etc in a way that is best for all of their student body.

As Wellsville has 13 candidates running for three positions on the Board this year, I am respectfully asking that you please educate yourself on the candidates that are running. Are they running to benefit the School District as a whole, or do they perhaps have a “hidden agenda” over a certain situation that happened, or are they just generally negative about the District and they are going to “fix” everything.

For many years, we have been so very fortunate to have a Board of Education that works well together, with their focus on what is best for ALL students. They have handled some very tough situations over the years with tact and diplomacy. We may not always agree with them, but sometimes we are also not privy to all of the facts. And, the simple truth is that nobody is perfect all of the time. The current Board has also supported a budget with an unchanged tax levy for many years. During the hardest years, while many schools were having to cut sports, music and art programs, etc., Wellsville was able to maintain all of their programs. Yes, on occasion, a booster club might have to step-up and cover some of the expenses if the budgeted amount has been exceeded. That is why we have fund raisers.

When you vote on the School Budget and for School Board members on May 21st, please vote for the candidates who have no “hidden agenda” and are running with the desire to continue to do what is best for the Wellsville Central School District. Educated voters are the best. Thank you!
