Fillmore, B-R splits tri-meet with two team wins each
BOLIVAR — After waiting another day to come together for action, the sun was shining and the sky was as clear as can be for the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg to welcome in both Fillmore and Houghton Academy for battle across the track and from the field in what was their final regular season collision leading up to next weekend’s Elks Spring Day in Wellsville.
In their Wednesday tri-meet in the Wolverine Den, it was both the Eagles and Wolverines that each collected two team victories through a bundle of strong performances, with the Eagles garnering both victories over the Wolverines, while the hosts claimed wins over Houghton Academy.
The Fillmore boys posted a one-point, 55-54 edge over the Wolverines behind seven first place finishes, with Noah Strickland’s pair of victories on the track carving the path ahead, triumphing in the 800 and 1600 runs.
The remaining five individual victories stemmed from five different performers to further the cause, with Henry Sardina (3200 run), Jayce Ashton (110 hurdles), Caleb Green (shot put), Jaydin Marshall (discus) and Eli Voss (pole vault) all picking up the wins.
As for the Lady Eagles, they countered with a magnificent and dominant performance of their own behind an 80-37 victory over the Lady Wolverines, scoring 10 first place finishes. Of their eight top individual finishes, Rachel Hatch was on fire with three, finishing first in the 200 dash, and in both hurdling events — the 100 and 400.
Fillmore also gained wins from Harlee Crane (100 dash), Annalisa Bialek (3000 run), Alex Thur (shot put) and Josslyn Andrews (high jump) to pair with two strong performances in the relay department, in the 400 and 1600 respectively.
The Bolivar-Richburg boys collected eight first place finishes to counter their close battle with Fillmore, as they garnered a 66-9 edge over Houghton Academy to collect one of their two wins over the Panthers. David Phearsdorf was the top performer for the Wolverines with three of their seven individual victories, medaling in the 400 dash, long jump and triple jump. Ren Button and Calyn Todd each recorded a pair of individual victories, with Button placing first in the 100 dash and in the high jump, while Todd medaled in the 200 dash and 400 hurdles.
The Wolverines also received a victory in the 1600 relay along the way to round off the performances.
For the Lady Wolverines, they garnered five first place finishes of their own — two each from both Raegan Giardini and Carmen Crowley to electrify the track and field, with Giardini sprinting to the finish line first in the 800 and 1500 runs, while Crowley claimed gold from the sand bunker in the long and triple jump events. Brena Walp had the team’s final individual win with the longest distance in the discus event.

BASEBALL: GV/B wins again
ALMOND — On the diamond, Wellsville and Bolivar-Richburg both eclipsed the double-digit victory threshold last week.
Presented with an opportunity to join two of Allegany County’s elites, Genesee Valley/Belfast claimed possession and ran away with it over the road against Alfred-Almond on Wednesday, coasting towards a 17-hit barrage to set the music in what was an 18-0 shutout.
Genesee Valley/Belfast (10-2) never looked behind them after setting the tone against the Eagles fresh out of the starting gate, as they scored all 18 of their runs in the first three innings of play — seven of them coming during their opening at-bats.
As for the offense, they propelled to big heights with five different hitters posting at least a pair of hits, with a 4-for-4 outing from Matt Cater leading the way, as he recorded a triple, two doubles and drove in four runs.
Adding more help along the way was Ryan Daciw, who went 3-for-3 with two doubles of his own, driving in four more runs. Evan Turybury, Nolan Hunter and Ty Hutchison all chipped in with two hits each.
To pair with a fiery and scorching hot offense, Daciw and Fisher Herdman tag-teamed to deliver a three-hit shutout of Alfred-Almond on the mound, with Daciw garnering the win with five strikeouts and a walk across his three-inning start.
In relief, Herdman mirrors Daciw’s performance with five strikeouts and a walk of his own.
For the host Eagles, Kanye Cumberbatch led the bats with a triple, while Peyton Barnes and Jonas Lockner each posted a hit. On the mound, Cumberbatch handed out three strikeouts and walked just one during his tenure of relief.
Genesee Valley/Belfast will look to stay hot back on the road tonight with a 5 p.m. visit to Hammondsport.

Cuba-Rushford 13, Fillmore 0 (F-5)
FILLMORE — Cuba-Rushford was on the prowl for a big victory to turn their ship around on Wednesday. In their latest road trip to Fillmore, it was the most opportune time to build a massive head of steam going into Senior night back home on the following day.
Slowly but surely, the Rebels went to work.
They would garner the lead to start the contest out, and as time continued to progress against the Eagles. The fire began to burn hotter and hotter leading up to the team’s ultimate crescendo in the top of the fifth, where they took a 6-0 lead and turned it into an all-out offensive wildfire by scoring a monumental seven-run stanza to pull away and out of reach in their securing of a 13-0 shutout to end a five-game slide.
On the heels of a dynamic pitching performance from Finn Ricketts on the mound, Eli Sleggs brought the big bat to the plate by posting a 3-for-4 outing that saw him drive home six runs — one of the knocks clearing the bases in the top of the fourth inning to help break the game open with a six-run lead for the Rebels (5-6).
It did not stop there.
Following a rapid 1-2-3 sequence in the bottom half against the Eagles (6-5), the Rebels kept their bats aflame to finish off the victory in the fifth, posting their final seven runs in the frame — two of them off an Adam Roe double to aid in setting up the offense, en route to pulling away in colossal fashion to find the win column.
The Rebels posted 13 runs off eight hits, with Finn Ricketts adding one to go with three RBI to boost the high-octane attack.
On the mound, Ricketts went all five innings by holding Fillmore to just one hit — a Nolan Krzeminski double in the bottom of the fourth, while issuing four strikeouts to procure the victory.
For the Eagles, Damon Potter went the first four innings on the mound, fanning five and walking four. Fillmore will look to turn it back around themselves coming up on Monday with a 5 p.m. visit from Genesee Valley/Belfast.
Cuba-Rushford now heads back home to host Senior Night with a 5 p.m. visit from Friendship/Scio.

ALMOND — It was as close and competitive as it would get across the majority of Genesee Valley/Belfast’s road tussle with Alfred-Almond on Wednesday, as they continued to hold a lead by the slimmest of margins after a bushel of scoreless frames were traded in back-and-forth succession.
But in the last three innings of play, a complete flip of the script entirely, as the two teams produced the remaining 14 runs on the scoreboard to direct one hectic finish to the night. Of those scores, nine of them belonged to the visitors in black and gray, as they continued to fuel their early one-run lead with five more unanswered runs to cement it for good despite some added pressure down the stretch, as they pulled towards a 10-5 road win.
“It started off good, but we struggled with the bats. We scored right away and then things went silent,” said GV/Belfast coach Mark Sullivan. “They battled back and they wound up cutting it to two going into the seventh, but Hannah (Southwick-Powers) pitched well to keep them off-balanced the best she could. We had some real good base-running to help manufacture some key runs, and Alfred-Almond hit the ball and had great defense as well. Give them credit for hanging right there with us.”
Before the contest turned into an all-out offensive blitz, the bolts were clamped down early in the midst of a defensive war between Genesee Valley/Belfast (7-3) and Alfred-Almond, as the visitors accounted for the first run of the game before the scoreless frames were traded for nearly four consecutive innings.
With Genesee Valley/Belfast maintaining a 1-0 lead on the Lady Eagles, they would manage to keep hanging onto the lead and build onto it in the top halves of the next two stanzas, scoring five unanswered runs to extend their lead to the largest margin it would reach in the game, now laying claim on a 6-0 advantage on the hosts in blue and gold.
Alfred-Almond would not let the rapid fury go unanswered before the final stand upon the horizon, as they closed the gap down to a pair of runs behind a four-run effort of their own in the sixth to set up a big finish.
In the seventh however, Genesee Valley/Belfast would have the final word, as they fought right back with a massive haymaker in the shape of their second four-run marker to officially push the game out of reach for Alfred-Almond.
Genesee Valley/Belfast posted 10 runs off 10 hits, with three different hitters all posted at least two. Leading the charge was Hannah Southwick-Powers, who recorded three. Abby Sullivan and Keanna Sands each had two to chip in.
On the mound, the victory belonged to Southwick-Powers, who held Alfred-Almond to four hits across 12 enormous strikeouts.
As for the Lady Eagles, Olivia Frazier went all seven innings in the circle, fanning three and walking three to lead the defense. At the plate, Frazier and Alexis Kuhn each blasted a double.
Up next is a quick turnaround back over the road for Genesee Valley/Belfast, as they prepare for a 5 p.m. visit to face the Hammondsport Lady Lakers tonight.

Wellsville edges towards tri-match sweep of Haverling, Hornell
WELLSVILLE — Some tough golf remains to be played down the stretch, as the aim for the Wellsville Lions on the links was to build a head full of steam to finish the season strong. With both Bath-Haverling and Hornell colliding with the Lions, it provided an excellent opportunity to do just that at the Wellsville Country Club on a beautiful Wednesday evening.
With Ethan Bailey sitting at the top of the Wellsville scorecard, the Lions would not be denied that chance, as he carded the team’s lowest round to lead a strong balance up and down the lineup to take down both the Rams (223-237) and the Red Raiders (223-231) with two pivotal and gargantuan victories.
Bailey fired Wellsville’s (7-4) best round of the match between the two incoming clubs, as he scored a team-low round of 51. Jackson Shoughrue followed with his score of 54, while Fletcher Kaye and Noah Brogan each chipped in with their rounds of 59.
Hornell was paced by the medalist round of 50 scored by Alex Norton. Following behind with additional help along the way was Noah Panter and his round of 57. Dakota Soles had a 58, while Riley Tierney fired a round of 66.
As for the Rams, they were paced by a team-low round of 54 carded by both Spencer Wheeler and Tucker Hutches.
Wellsville is back on the links today over the road, as they visit the Bolivar Golf Club to take on the host Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg at 4 p.m.
Fillmore 174, Cuba-Rushford 239
RUSHFORD — Following one of their closest matches of the season against Genesee Valley/Belfast, the Eagles of Fillmore stood tall as Allegany County’s lone undefeated on the golf course.
On Wednesday, they turned right around and picked up where they left off against “visiting” Cuba-Rushford at Allegheny Hills, with Layton Sanasith helping guide the Eagles with his best round of the season in the team’s 174-239 win to move to 7-0 on the season.
Sanasith pieced together Fillmore’s (7-0) leading round at the top of the scorecard, as he garnered medalist honors against the Rebels with his match-low round of 41. Anderson Wiltsey was not far behind, pitching in his round of 43. Jack Cool and Reid Cockle finished off the scoring with their rounds of 45.
Cuba-Rushford (2-4) was paced by a team-low round of 52 provided by Kaden Bell. Sebastian Saulter recorded a round of 58, while Coen Kellogg and Zach Deck followed with their rounds of 64 and 65, respectively.
Both teams are back on the links Monday night in a pair of 4 p.m. tee times, with Fillmore heading to Ischua Valley in Franklinville to take on host Hinsdale, while Cuba-Rushford stays put at Allegheny Hills to welcome in Bolivar-Richburg.
BOYS TENNIS
Wellsville 3, Avoca-Prattsburgh 2
WELLSVILLE — Both Avoca-Prattsburgh and Wellsville gave it their all across all four matches in action early on, with each team splitting with a pair of wins.
It would all come down to a first doubles match that saw an epic first set tiebreak help set the tone for the remainder of the match. In the end, the Lions duo of Michael Bidzerkowny and David Anderson came away victorious to aid the team’s 3-2 edging of the visiting Titans on Wednesday.
Bidzerkowny and Anderson fought furiously from start to finish against Avoca-Prattsburgh’s Landon White and Braelynn Dowdle, as they survived a magnificent first-set tiebreak to shift the momentum into the next set of play, scoring the eventual 7-6 (4), 6-3 decision to capture match victory for the Lions (7-4).
Adding wins prior to the grand finale was Wheeler Dahlgren at third singles, as he rolled past his opponent with a strong 6-0, 6-1 win. To round off, the second doubles pairing of Jonah Mac and Keenen O’Connor also collected a 6-0, 6-1 victory of their own to roll past Parker Nichols and Ava Roy.
Avoca-Prattsburgh formulated their two victories in the singles department, paced by a 6-0, 6-0 shutout pitched by Elias Putnam in his victory over Wellsville’s Adam Iantorno. Following up was Gavin Mills and his back-and-forth, 6-3, 6-3 edge of Jeremiah Pensyl at second singles.
Wellsville will look to keep the motor running across all facets Monday night, as they host Senior Night festivities with Alfred-Almond at 5 p.m.

CUBA — The Eagles of Fillmore continued to rip and roar across all facets on the tennis court, as they used another sweep of all five matches to take care of business on the road Wednesday night, rolling towards a 5-0 shutout against host Cuba-Rushford to remain undefeated with their ninth straight win.
The dynamic trio of Eben Schilke, Isaiah Sisson and Marcus Wolfer reignited their fire with straight-set wins across the board, with Schilke and his 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Cuba-Rushford’s Ethan Cole at first singles paving the way.
Sisson followed at second singles with a dominant performance of his own, claiming the 6-1, 6-1 win over Tyler Findlay. Wolfer finished off the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 victory of his own over Carter Brown at third singles.
Both doubles matches were awarded to Fillmore (9-0) via forfeit, with the first doubles team of Carson Sanasith and Ezra Knapp and the second doubles duo of Kallan Sanasith and Brayden Walton garnering the triumphs over the Rebels.
The Eagles are on the road again Monday night with a 5 p.m. visit against Andover/Whitesville at Alfred-Almond, while the Rebels (1-4) are back on their home court for a Friday night first serve against Bolivar-Richburg, beginning at 5 p.m.
