SCIO, NY, April 17, 2024 – Scio Central School District is getting top marks from the Western New York Education Alliance for their early literacy efforts after the group analyzed their state reading scores from the 2022-23 school year. Using a calculated “average proficiency rate,” the alliance rated the district scored in the 99th percentile and two standard deviations above other rural districts in WNY.

“We are very proud of our teaching staff and their desire to always keep improving their instruction,” Superintendent Jennifer Cappelletti said.

Scio was among four rural districts in Western New York that were acknowledged as a 2022-23 Gold Medal Winner. The metrics used to arrive at this score included data such as NYSED proficiency scores, economically disadvantaged norming, and improvement in scores compared to other rural districts.

In recent years, Scio’s students have been provided with vibrant academic, enrichment and physical activities through the ARP/ESSER after-school grant funding as well as the YMCA Extended School Day program. The families have responded positively and the district will be working hard to keep these opportunities available in the coming years.

The WNY Education Alliance, whose mission it is to improve the lives of children in communities throughout Western New York by expanding and enhancing educational and extracurricular growth opportunities, released their first WNY Reading Report Card in 2023 with state test scores from the 2021-22 school year.
