Lawrence “Larry” D. Perkins, 62, died unexpectedly on Sunday (April 14, 2024) as a result of a sudden medical event.
Mr. Perkins was born on September 7, 1961 in North Hornell to Orville H. and Florence A. (Newland) Perkins, Jr. He attended Andover Central School through tenth grade and graduated from Alfred-Almond Central School in 1980. On December 24, 1993 in the Gothic Chapel at Alfred University, Larry married the love of his life, Mary A. Cronin, who survives.
Larry worked more than 36 years at Alfred State College, and retired from his position as Maintenance Supervisor in 2016. During his vocational career he was awarded the prestigious employee Pioneer Award on two occasions.
In addition to his wife of 30 years, Larry is survived by two daughters, Carly Perkins of Santa Fe, N.M. and Erica Perkins of Andover; his siblings, Brenda (Glenn) Kruger of Wellsville, Carl (Joyce) Thompson of Greenwood, Orville (Donna) Perkins, III of Alfred Station, John (Debbie) Perkins of Arkport, and Steve Perkins of Wellsville; his mother- and father-in-law, James P. (Loretta) Cronin of Wellsville; five sisters-in-law, Laura (Robert) Crittenden of Monroeville, Pa., Cathleen (William) Barnett of Santa Fe, N.M., Polly (Ron) Broughton of Wellsville, Kay Cronin of Wellsville, and Connie (Ken) Langley of Albuquerque, N.M.; one brother-in-law, James (Elizabeth) Cronin, Jr. of Alfred; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by both his parents.
Larry was a hardworking man; a jack-of-all trades who could fix or build anything.
Larry took pleasure in many activities. He was an avid gardener, growing both flowers and vegetables. He also canned trophies from his labors. Larry celebrated the great outdoors by hunting, both bow and rifle, and fishing; and in the spring time, he was running the sugar shack making maple syrup.
As a spectator, he was an enthusiastic NASCAR and New York Jets fan. He enjoyed playing just about any sport, but was partial to golf. Larry was always up for camping and spent many great weekends at Keuka Lake, Branchport, and in the Poconos, often during NASCAR races.
His daughters highlight their greatest memories as those made while camping, sharing bonfires, swimming and gardening.
Larry was a man of character; honest and good-natured. His was a kind disposition that never held a grudge. He was truly generous. He was helpful, even offering support for his in-laws by transporting them to their doctors’ appointments, and many other thoughtful acts. Larry felt that what was fair for one was fair for all. He was a treasure to his family; a wonderful son, husband, and father. He cherished his people well.
