Three students from Mrs. Miller’s first-grade class at Genesee Valley Central School were selected as winners in the Annual Genesee Valley Peace Poetry Contest sponsored by the English Department at SUNY Geneseo.

For the contest, students in grades K-8 from throughout the region were asked to write about the theme of peace—what peace means to them, what gives them peace, their ideas about a peaceful world, or any other idea related to peace. Over 250 poems were submitted and 50 were selected to receive awards, which were judged by creative writing students at the university.

Clara Clancy was named the Overall First Place Winner for the K-2 grade category for her poem “Toc in Bed.” Other winners from Mrs. Miller’s class included Rory Wilkins for her poem “Quiet Time in Peace,” and Penelope Tucker, for her poem “When I Feel at Peace.”

“I am so excited for these students,” shared Mrs. Miller. “Watching six-year-olds create beautiful poems about peace is a moving moment as a teacher. I am looking forward to cheering them on and watching them shine at their special reading and reception at Geneseo!”

All winners have been invited to a public reading on Saturday, April 20 in the Wadsworth Auditorium at Geneseo.
