Has Served the 148th District for 19 Years

OLEAN – Assemblyman Joseph M. Giglio (R,C-Gowanda) announced Friday that he won’t seek re-election in November for the 148th Assembly District seat he’s held for nearly two decades.

“It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be able to serve the people of the 148th Assembly district and I will always be grateful to them for the opportunity they’ve given me to represent them in the New York State Assembly,” Giglio said. “A sacred trust is formed when someone votes for you, chooses you, to faithfully represent them and fight for their best interests.

“I have fought, and will continue to fight, for the people of the 148th Assembly District. I don’t have to be in Albany to do that.”

Giglio has represented the 148th Assembly District for 19 years. He will serve the remainder of his current term which ends Dec. 31.

The 148th Assembly District spans three counties, including all of Cattaraugus County, all of Allegany County and the towns of Greenwood, Jasper, Troupsburg and West Union in Steuben County.

“I’ve been in the Assembly 19 years this June. Nineteen and a half when my term ends in December,” Giglio said. “It’s time to step away and give someone else a chance to represent the district. But this isn’t a retirement. I’m looking forward to the next chapter.”

Giglio has dedicated his professional career to public service. Prior to running for office in 2005, he served as New York State Deputy Inspector General. As Deputy Inspector General, Giglio led investigations into alleged criminal activity, fraud, waste and abuse within state agencies. He also investigated alleged criminal activity by private individuals and companies that do business with New York State. His efforts to root out corruption saved taxpayers’ dollars and eliminated government waste.

Prior to joining the Inspector General’s Office, Giglio served as a special assistant in the New York State Attorney General’s office, with responsibility for coordinating efforts with all branches of government. He was also a member of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office.

Giglio said his law enforcement experience helped him be an effective advocate for the Southern Tier in Albany.

Giglio and his wife Ann live in Gowanda. They have four grown children and two grandchildren.

“It’s too easy to get caught up in this and let what’s really important in life pass you by,” Giglio said. “I look forward to driving my grandchildren to school.”

A lifelong Western New Yorker, he said his goal has always been to advance legislation in Albany that protects the district and improves life for all New York residents.

“If we’re not trying to build a better future for our children and our grandchildren, then what’s the point?” Giglio said “When I first ran for office, I promised everyone that if they sent me to Albany, I would give 110 percent and not settle for anything less than my absolute best. That’s what I tried to do every day.”

“Thank you all for your faith in me and putting your trust in me. I hope I never let you down.”

Giglio is the Chairman of the Assembly Minority Conference’s Committee on Standing Committees, part of the leadership team in Albany. He is the Ranking Minority Member of the Ethics and Guidance Committee, Ranking Minority Member of the Committee on Corrections, a member of the Assembly Rules Committee and a member of the Racing and Wagering Committee.

In addition, Giglio was the Assembly Minority’s appointment to the Public Authorities Control Board and the Medicaid Redesign Team. The team reviewed the Medicaid program for two years, uncovering approximately $2.5 billion in savings enacted as part of the State budget.

Giglio also served as co-chair of the Assembly Minority Task Force on Preventing Domestic Violence, the Assembly Minority Task Force on Heroin Addiction & Community Response, and the Assembly Minority Conference Criminal Justice Reform Study.

He was also chair or co-chair of the Assembly Minority Statewide Forum on Workforce Issues in the Correctional System; a member of the Medicaid Waste, Fraud and Abuse Task Force; the Agriculture, Tourism and Outdoor Recreation Task Force; and the Crime in our Communities Task Force.

Assemblyman Joseph Giglio represents the 148th District, which consists of all of Cattaraugus and Allegany counties and portions of Steuben County as well. For more information, visit Assemblyman Giglio’s Official Website.
