Charlotte Anne Slattery Ballerstein 10/26/1930 – 12/04/2023, Passed away peacefully with family at her side. She was born and raised in Kenmore NY. There she attended Mount St. Mary’s high school, (class of 1948) and later attended Nursing school (class of 1951).
She met Carl W. Ballerstein while working as a Registered Nurse at Lockport General Hospital. They were married August 30, 1968 in Lockport NY at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Later that year they would move to East Liverpool, Ohio. In 1981 she became a sales representative for Proctor & Gamble traveling mostly in the north east. In the spring of 1984 the family moved to Whitesville, New York. There she continued as a sales rep., and assisted her husband who owned and operated Whitesville Grocery until their retirement in 1994.
After their youngest daughter’s wedding they hopped in the car and traveled to each of their kids homes. It was during this trip that they found and fell in love with Vero Beach, Florida. Soon they became “snow birds”. In 1996 it was decided to sell the house in NY and move to Vero Beach permanently. They both became involved in the community, making so many wonderful friends and neighbors. It wasn’t until recent months that Charlotte would move north to Jacksonville, Florida to live with her daughter and son-in-law.
Charlotte, in her words, had a very blessed life full of so many wonderful memories. Carl and Charlotte traveled to many countries, took many cruises, but their favorite trips were always spent with family. Early in their marriage they would rent a cottage in the Fingerlakes region of NY with their lifelong friends, the Monroe family. It was always an adventure when these two families were together. Some of Charlotte’s fondest memories were with the Monroe family. Later in life, she and Carl would rent a cottage every other year and hold a reunion for all of their children, grand children, and eventually their great grand children. Together Charlotte and Carl had seven children, seventeen grand children, and seventeen great grand children.
Charlotte was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Celestia Slattery, husband Carl, her two brothers Charles and Patrick Slattery, and daughter Charla Bonner. She is survived by her daughters, Carol (Frank) Cessna, Federal Way, Wa., Gail (Rich) Bredsten, Cloquet MN, Karen (Anthony) Cataldo, Jacksonville Fl., sons Mark (Deb) Bonner, Bonita Springs Fl., Alan Ballerstein, Jacksonville Fl., Kurt (Tracey) Ballerstein, 17 Grandchildren, 17 Great Grandchildren and forever friends Elrene Monroe, Lockport NY., and Tammy Ballerstein, East Liverpool Ohio.
Charlotte was born into a small family and married into a large one. She never felt out of place, and made sure those who came to visit always felt welcome. She found her comedic side later in life, often seen wearing costumes to the community events at Village Green. Her only regret was not being able to spend more time with family and friends.
There will be a committal service January 20th at 11:00 A.M. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1850 6th Ave., Vero Beach, Florida 32960. Immediately after there will be a celebration of life at Village Green in the Swan Lake clubhouse. Please join us, share stories, and celebrate the wonderful life Charlotte had. .
