“Everybody’s a little bit mad here, you know.” This declaration of the Cheshire Cat says it all!
When Alice chases a rabbit down the rabbit hole, she must find her way home with the help of—and sometimes in spite of—the input of the characters she encounters in this strange, new place. This weekend, Wellsville Secondary School Theatre is proud to present this enchanting tale with their production of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.
The cast has been hard at work since the end of August preparing for this family-friendly production. There are 7 seniors in the company, veterans of the stage who bring experience and maturity to the performance, playing roles that include the Cheshire Cat, the King of Hearts, the White Rabbit, the March Hare, and Humpty Dumpty. The role of Alice is played by Maddie Muurisepp, one of the 7 juniors in the cast. Her performance, as well as that of the rest of the actors, is certain to captivate the imagination of the members of the audience. Other iconic roles played by juniors include the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter and the Mock Turtle. Added to all of this experience is the energy and enthusiasm of 7 first-time actors to Wellsville’s stage. All in all, the cast is bringing the well-known world of Lewis Carroll’s imagination delightfully to life.
Director Matt Warren is pleased with the students. “Our cast has grown in their abilities with each rehearsal, from having their lines memorized very early on, to being prepared and ready to work hard each day. We’re excited for the Wellsville community finally to travel with us to Wonderland!”
This production has two unique aspects for Wellsville. Two performances will take place in the Wellsville Secondary School Auditorium this weekend, one on Friday at 7:30pm and the second at 2:00pm on Sunday. There will be no Saturday night performance at the school due to the annual JMH Gala. But in addition to that, for the first time ever, the show will go on the road. On Sunday, November 19th, they will have a performance at 2:00pm at the Palmer Opera House in Cuba, NY.
Producer Diane Willard explains the rationale for this extra performance. “We decided that with Alice in Wonderland, we had the perfect show to expand the opportunities for our students. Taking a show to a different locale is a new experience for our cast and gives them a theatrical challenge we know they can handle. It also exposes people in Wellsville to an amazing historical performance venue in our area, the Palmer Opera House.”
Tickets can be purchased at the door of each performance. General Admission is $10 while students and seniors pay $5.
