PITTSFORD — Just like the season has gone for the Lady Lions of Wellsville all year long, the momentum they had built carried into Individual Sectional play on Monday up north in Pittsford.

At Pittsford-Mendon, it would begin with a strong season from Samantha Bidzerkowny, and as a result, she led the field of performers for the Lady Lions by becoming a Class B2 Individual champion — one of six total Lady Lions that wound up advancing into the State Qualifier stage next week at the Mendon Pool and Racquet Club.

Bidzerkowny weaved her way to victory for Wellsville in the Class B2 title match against Avoca/Prattsburgh’s Genevieve Dabby through a first-set tiebreak and then a dominant finish, recording the 7-6 (6), 6-2 victory to claim the ultimate prize. Wellsville also saw their dynamic first doubles team of Caitlin Bittel and Hanna Miles finish as runners-up in their Championship doubles match, receiving an automatic bid for the State Qualifier match along the way.

Meagan Riley pitched in a strong effort of her own in singles competition, as she knocked off Alfred-Almond’s Candy Zhou by a 6-2, 6-4 decision. In the doubles field, the team of McKenna Wonderling and Sarah Mattison also advanced into the Qualifier stage alongside Riley and the rest of their Lady Lions teammates with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Avoca/Prattsburgh’s Camryn Moore and Gracie Cole.

The State Qualifier Tournament will span across a two-day stretch in Mendon beginning on October 13 and October 14 at the Mendon Pool and Racquet Club.

As for their next piece of regular season action, the Lady Lions will look to close out a perfect regular season tonight with a 5 p.m. visit to St. Bonaventure University to take on the Olean Lady Huskies.
