The annual trout derby sponsored by the Wellsville Lions Club has enjoyed a very typical spring day on the Genesee River. The temperatures were mild compared to prior weekends where fishermen needed winter gear to keep warm. River conditions were just about ideal and the weather has been a nice mix of light rain showers and sunshine.

Every year for decades, the Wellsville Lions Club purchase hundreds of tagged fish and release them into the Genesee River just prior to the event. Among those fish is always the top dollar, Community Fish, which gets more and more valuable as the derby progresses. This year, local angler Bill Kurtz, caught #0001 mid-day Saturday and proudly collected $2778.50 from Lion Dean Arnold.
