Some cows escape crash, multiple agencies respond

Statement and images from the Angelica Fire and Rescue:

4/4/23

At 04:24 this morning, we were dispatched to assist the state police with traffic control after a tractor-trailer carrying cattle traveling westbound near MM115 in the Town of West Almond went off the roadway and overturned in the median. Some of the cows were able to escape due to damage to the trailer and headed both east and west causing a serious traffic hazard especially because it was still dark out.

Not long after we got on location another tractor trailer struck one of the cows approximating 1 mile east of the initial accident in the east bound lane. We ended up shutting down the westbound lane at the West Almond exit for hours not only for the tractor trailer recovery being done by Enchanted Mountain Recovery, but also so we could eventually locate and herd the cows east off the West Almond exit. Great job by Enchanted Mountain Recovery, the State Police, DOT, and our crew working together to get I-86 re-opened. Our units were back in service at 09:43 this morning.
