Allegany County Deputy Sheriff’s Association awards annual scholarships; Barkley lineup for 2023

When a COVID spike caused gyms to limit spectators, the annual Dan Barkley Showcase was canceled in January.

It was the second straight year of no games. The deputies did not want to see the reason to honor the late Dan Barkley end.

Thanks to the Deputy Association, students were still able to earn Allegany County Deputy Sheriff’s Association (ACDSA) Scholarship Awards.

Dana Hand, the union steward with the Allegany County Deputy Sheriff’s Association said the deputies didn’t want to cancel the scholarships, so they have funded the awards the past two years.

In the past, the scholarships were from sponsors, the crowd, the 50-50’s and the donations from the deputies.

The games will go on again this year (see schedule below) as the Wellsville and Hornell rivalry continues and defending New York State Champion Avoca-Prattsburgh has been added to the slate.

Congratulations to the seven local students!
