By Andrew Harris
Early in July we reported a big announcement by hometown hero and owner of the Martelle Dance Academy, Kate Martelle. Her students at the academy have been invite to perform at the pre-race ceremony for the upcoming NASCAR race at the Watkins Glenn International Speedway. Read that story here:
That means a performance in front of 85,000 fans and lots of preparation and then travel to the venue. The Wellsville community is helping the dancers make this exciting reality happen with small donations and well wishes. You can help very simply, make a Paypal or Venmo contribution to Kate and her academy to help offset the expense of such an honor.
This news has a little history as well. Kate’s father, Dan Martelle spent many years as a key part of NASCAR at Watkins Glen. Dan was an chief of the emergency crew that responded to NASCAR accidents on the track. Kate’s mom, Karen Martelle, has also worked at Watkins Glen for “Race Medical.” Kate’s dad, who passed in 2019, was interviewed for this 1998 article in FIREHOUSE magazine.

Today, Kate’s brother Christopher Martelle is still involved with the race at “Glen” as a Course Marshall for this years race.
