WELLSVILLE — There wasn’t a single cloud in the sky to be had. The sun was gleaming ever so brightly, and the stars were on the track and in the field from within the confines of the Lion’s Den on Thursday, when the host Lions prepared for battle against both Cuba-Rushford and Fillmore to help close out another week of action.
With both Lions track squads riding high on a magnificent assembly of their campaign, it would remain unchanged once more, with Xavier Scott and JJ Howard guiding the boys team towards remaining undefeated with two more team wins, while the Lady Lions saw nine different performers all garner an individual win, as Wellsville swept their entire home meet in style.
Behind 10 total first place finishes, Scott and Howard were right at the front of the pack for the Lions, who have now won 15 straight, as each performer highlighted with a pair of wins to their resume during their 113-25 win over Fillmore and 81-57 win over Cuba-Rushford.
Scott delivered victory from the track with his winning times in the 100 dash and 110 hurdles, while Howard took his talents to the field to cash in on a personal best, winning height in the high jump, and from the sand pit in the triple jump event.
In addition to a winning 3200 relay event, Jack Davis claimed an outright first place finish in the 400 hurdles to help Scott in sweeping both hurdling events before tying his teammate, Xander Outman, with the largest height in the pole vault event.
Rounding off the individual wins for the Lions were Collin Perkins (800 run) and Kamron Dodge (3200 run).
As for the Lady Lions, they would dominate the field of competition with 12 first place finishes themselves — nine victories from nine different performers, along with a sweep of all three relay events, to power up 106-33 and 117-17 victories over the Lady Eagles and Lady Rebels, respectively.
Garnering the individual wins for the Lady Lions were Caelyn Stevens (100 dash), Morgan Mattison (1500 run), Kaylie Fuller (3000 run), Talia O’Connor (400 hurdles), Kaylee Oswald (discus), Brooklyn Dahlgren (high jump), Lauren Viglietta (long jump), Kylie Phelps (triple jump) and Jaden Dunbar (pole vault).
Back up in the boys field of competition, Cuba-Rushford would perform a split in the meet, garnering an 80-35 win over Fillmore behind six first place finishes — two of them courtesy of Tristan Clayson, who swept both throwing events from the field, in the shot put and discus.
Anderson Siegel chipped in with a 200 dash victory, as he defeated Wellsville’s JJ Howard by 0.2 seconds to claim gold. To round off for the Rebels, Ethan Coleman triumphed in the long jump to add his win alongside team wins in the 400 and 1600 relay events.
On the flip side for the Lady Rebels, they finished third after Fillmore claimed a 60-31 edge, scoring just two first place finishes from Cloey Larabee in the 400 dash and Alleyah Gross in the shot put.
The Fillmore boys placed third overall with just two first place finishes from Henry Sardina in the 400 run and Noah Strickland in the 1600 run, while the Lady Eagles claimed second with their win over the Lady Rebels.
Fillmore would post three first place finishes, two from Rachel Hatch, as she sped her way towards the finish line in the 200 dash and 100 hurdles, while Ava Sylvester crossed the finish line first in the 800 run.
The next event that will take place in the Lion’s Den is the annual Pentathlon and Steeplechase meet, which will begin Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

GV/Belfast rolls in tri-meet with Fri/Scio, Houghton at B-R
BOLIVAR — There was simply no denying Genesee Valley/Belfast victory on Thursday at Bolivar-Richburg, as the boys team scored a first place finish in all but one event to dominate the field of play, while the ladies squad scored seven first place finishes of their own to claim their victory over the host Lady Wolverines to help conclude a magnificent performance over the road.
The boys picked up a 100-9 victory over host Bolivar-Richburg behind 13 first place finishes, including a sweep of all three relay events, with three different performers all posting two individual wins each.
Leading the way was Thayne Cobb, who raced to glory in the 100 dash and later from the field, in the triple jump. Following was a sweep of both distance events from Noah Miller, as he triumphed in the 1600 and 3200 runs, while Callahan Tallman chipped in with his two wins in the high and long jumps.
Adding more help along the way with a win each for Genesee Valley/Belfast were Wyatt Weaver (200 dash), Brayden Cooper (400 dash), Sal Gambino (800 run) and Bryce Davis (shot put).
As for the ladies team, they used seven top finishes to aid their 66-54 edging of the Lady Wolverines, with Bayleigh Tallman and Sophie Zillgitt’s three individual victories captaining the efforts.
Following a four-win performance at the beginning of the week, Tallman came through with three more divine performances stemming off wins in the 200 dash, 400 dash and long jump, while Zillgitt garnered her victories in the 800 run, 100 hurdles and high jump events.
Adding more help was Allyson Hazelton, who scored a 400 hurdles win.
Friendship/Scio scored three first place finishes between their two teams in action, as the boys scored a 70-3 win over Houghton Academy, while the ladies posted a 53-11 win over the Lady Panthers in return.
For the boys, Jerimiah Brown collected their lone victory from the throwing pits, as he garnered the winning distance in the discus. As for the girls team, Cassidy Scholla and Kennedy Hunt led the way with wins of their own in the 100 dash and shot put, respectively, to pair alongside their winning 400 relay event.
Bolivar-Richburg posted two wins against Houghton Academy to help close out the quad-meet with 50-6 and 79-8 decisions for the boys and girls squad each.
The Wolverines saw five first place finishes come to fruition across the meet — all from the girls, with Raegan Giardini (1500 run), Brena Walp (discus) and Carmen Crowley (triple jump) capturing gold to go with a pair of relay wins in the 1600 and 3200.

GOLF
Wellsville 238, Hinsdale 269
WELLSVILLE — Following one of their most competitive battles on the golf course this season with Fillmore this past Tuesday, the Lions of Wellsville navigated their way back into the win column behind a strong co-medalist round from Noah Brogan to get back to the .500 mark on the campaign with a registering of a 238-269 victory on Thursday over visiting Hinsdale at the Wellsville Country Club.
Brogan would go on to share medalist honors with Hinsdale’s Caden Miller at the end of the day, as both golfers each recorded a round of 57 to fill the top spots on their respective scorecards.
Behind Brogan was Fletcher Kaye and his round of 58. Blake Kalkhof chipped in his round of 60, while Jackson Shoughrue rounded off with a 63.
Following Miller for the Bobcats was Brett Bergstrom, who had a round of 69. Jenna Sutton recorded a 70, while Alex Dove had a 73. Hinsdale will return to action Monday night back home at Ischua Valley in Franklinville to welcome in the “visiting” Panthers of Franklinville.
Wellsville returns to the Wellsville Country Club the following day, on Tuesday, hosting Cuba-Rushford at 4 p.m.
Fillmore 207, Bolivar-Richburg 260
BOLIVAR — After trading in his baseball glove for some golf clubs to help close out an illustrious career this Spring in Fillmore, Zach Sisson charted a course to the top of the scorecard for the Eagles during Thursday’s visit to the Bolivar Golf Club, where he scored medalist honors to set up a 207-260 win over host Bolivar-Richburg to aid the team’s fourth straight win.
Sisson assembled his best round of golf this season to lead the Eagles (4-0) out front, as he scored the match-low round of 47 to help set up shop. Behind him was Anderson Wiltsey, who recorded a round of 50. Sam Cool chipped in with his round of 53, while Layton Sanasith had a 57 to pitch in along the way.
Bolivar-Richburg (0-4) was paced by a team-low round of 53 fired by David Abdo. James Margeson carded a round of 67. Cayden Gaines was not far behind him with his round of 68, while Zach Mitchell rounded off with a 72. The Wolverines will make their return to the links on Tuesday with a trip to Franklinville for a 4 p.m. tee time with host Hinsdale at Ischua Valley.
The Eagles are now off until Monday night back home to Allegheny Hills in Rushford, when they host Arkport-Canaseraga in a 4 p.m. contest of their own.
GV/Belfast stays unbeaten at 6-0 behind sweep of Ark-Can, win at C-R.
WELLSVILLE/RUSHFORD — The rain halted all but one single event on Wednesday, but over the course of time, the bad weather made its way out of the picture and arriving behind it the following day, was as blue of a sky as you could imagine.
No matter the weather outdoors, the Genesee Valley/Belfast golf squad fought it all in one foul swoop across a 24-hour span to remain undefeated on the season, beginning with a strong 205-226 Wednesday victory over visiting Arkport-Canaseraga at the Wellsville Country Club, completing their season sweep of the Wolves in the rain.
Will Guilford assembled the team’s leading round of the evening, as he posted the leading round of 49 to cement his spot at the top of the Genesee Valley/Belfast scorecard. Right behind him was Chris Weaver, who was a stroke removed from the lead, as he posted a 50. Grant Preston and Sean Mahon each pitched in a 53.
Arkport-Canaseraga was led by the medalist round of 39 shot by Sebastian Carroll.
The next day, Guilford would go on to shoot his second straight team-leading round for Genesee Valley/Belfast, this time garnering medalist honors himself at Allegheny Hills in Rushford, as he recorded a match-low round of 48 to pace the team’s 210-244 win over the host Rebels of Cuba-Rushford on Thursday.
Grant Preston posted a 53 to further Genesee Valley/Belfast’s (6-0) balanced cause behind him. Chris Weaver tallied a 54, while Sean Mahon had a 55 to chip in.
Cuba-Rushford (2-2) was led by Kaden Bell and his team-low round of 52. Sebastian Saulter scored a 57, while Ethan Fries and Coen Kellogg rounded off the scoring with rounds of 67 and 68, respectively. The Rebels will now get set for a 4 p.m. road trip on Tuesday to the Wellsville Country Club to take on the host Lions.
The day before, Genesee Valley/Belfast will make their way back to the Wellsville Country Club themselves, as they host a 4 p.m. Monday tee time with Jasper-Troupsburg.
BOYS TENNIS
Fillmore 4, Wellsville 1
WELLSVILLE — The Fillmore Eagles have been untouchable all season long leading up to Thursday night’s road trip to Wellsville. Across their first six matches of the season, the Section V juggernauts on the tennis court collected triumphant performances in each one of them to turn the key to their engines.
It was no different again in their seventh match of the campaign, as they used another dynamic and high-powered sweep of all three singles matches against the Lions to their fullest of advantages to jumpstart the first of a back-to-back set on the road with a 4-1 win.
Eben Schilke and Isaiah Sisson propelled the Eagles (7-0) into the win column at first and second singles, as both competitors delivered a 6-2, 6-0 victory in their respective matches over Wellsville’s Adam Iantorno and Jeremiah Pensyl to get the ball rolling. Further down the court at third singles, Marcus Wolfer was able to withstand a tough battle with Wheeler Dahlgren across all three sets of play, as he posted a difficult, but rewarding 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Down in the doubles matches, the night was finished off on a strong note for Fillmore by the team of Ezra Knapp and Carson Sanasith at first doubles, as they used a first-set tiebreak to go all in on a great second-set finish to defeat Wellsville’s Michael Bidzerkowny and David Anderson by a 7-5, 6-2 count.
The Lions (5-3) saw their lone win develop at second doubles from the duo of Jonah Mac and Caydon Grimes, as the pair survived a back-and-forth tussle with Fillmore’s Kallan Sanasith and Brayden Walton with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win.
Both teams are back on the court over the road today in a pair of 5 p.m. first serves, with Fillmore heading north to visit Warsaw, while Wellsville zooms over the summit to take on host Bolivar-Richburg.

BOLIVAR — Although a forfeit win was awarded at second doubles, the field of play between both Cuba-Rushford and Bolivar-Richburg was as level as it got, Thursday night over the summit in Bolivar.
Both the Rebels and the Wolverines each scored a pair of victories in each, the singles and doubles departments, to power up the match’s generator on the tennis court. But when it was all said and done, that forfeit victory belonged to the hosts, as they managed to squeak their way towards victory by a 3-2 count.
Leading the way for the Wolverines (3-2) were a pair of singles victories, with a tough first singles batter endured by Anthony Densmore, as he survived a close first-set tiebreak with Cuba-Rushford’s Ethan Cole and provided a strong finish to power his 7-5, 6-1 win.
Trevor Whitsell followed at third singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win to go with their second doubles forfeit obtained by the team of Starlyn Kisel and Jamie Werner to finish their team win.
The Rebels (0-3) garnered their two wins from each field of play, led by a second singles win for Tyler Findlay, as he posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Bolivar-Richburg’s Dustin Murray.
In the only doubles battle of the evening, the team of Jadyn Little and Jasmine Roe both fought tooth and nail across all three sets against Alex Parker and Nebula Wilson-Smith, as they overcame a first-set defeat to capture two tiebreaking victories to close out the match, scoring the 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 win, with a 7-3 victory in the third set tiebreaker.
Cuba-Rushford returns to battle Monday night with a 5 p.m. visit to Andover/Whitesville.
As for the Wolverines, they will play host to Wellsville tonight in a 5 p.m. first serve of their own.
