BELMONT — The slick, cool conditions would not put a damper on a massive meet between four different schools, who all met at one place at one time, as Genesee Valley/Belfast welcomed Wellsville, Fillmore and Houghton Academy for action on Wednesday.

At the end of the quad-meet between the Allegany County foes, one team stood out from the rest of the pack, as the Lions of Wellsville were at the top of their game with multiple first place finishes that would lead to a meet sweep in both the boys and girls side of competition, with the boys leading the way with victories over host Genesee Valley/Belfast (76-55), Fillmore (95-32) and Houghton Academy (98-26).

The Lions boys team scored nine total first place finishes, with John Layfield heading the front with three overall finishes, including a sweep of the throwing events with wins in the shot put and discus to go with his 100 dash victory from the track.

Wellsville would score a pair of relay victories in the process, crossing the finish line first in both the 1600 and 3200 relays. Adding help individually along the way with their own medaling times were: Ben Jordan in the 800 sprint, Noah Joslyn in the 1600 run, Eli Brophy in the 3200 run, and JT Mariotti in the pole vault.

On the ladies side, the Lady Lions led the field of competition with wins of their own over Genesee Valley/Belfast (95-20), Fillmore (84-37) and Houghton Academy (108-4), collecting eight top finishes to make it 17 total for the entire team across the day’s action.

Leading the charge was Alyssa Dorrough and Brooklyn Stisser, as they each collected winning times and distances from each aspect, with Dorrough placing first in the 100 dash and shot put, while Stisser medaled in the 200 dash and long jump. Kaylee Oswald and Brooklyn Dahlgren rounded off the top finishes for Wellsville with wins in the discus, and high jump respectively.

The Lady Lions would also record two first place finishes in the relay department, capturing winning times in the 400 and 3200 relays.

Placing second overall in the meet on the boys side was Genesee Valley/Belfast, as they recorded victories over both Fillmore (58-49) and Houghton Academy (62-33) behind six first place finishes, two each from both Morgan Torrey and Zach Bourne.

Torrey collected both his wins from the field with medals in the high jump and long jump, while Bourne provided a sweep of both hurdling events, scoring triumphs in the 110 and 400 hurdles. Sal Gambino rounded off the individual wins for the JagDogs with a 400 sprint win. The team would also go on to place first in the 400 relay.

As for the Lady JagDogs, they would place third overall as they collected a 70-13 win over Houghton Academy to claim that spot behind just two first place finishes from the track from Alicia Borden, and Sophie Zillgitt, as they recorded wins in the 400 and 800 sprint, respectively.

The Fillmore boys would place third overall with a 51-26 win over the Panthers, as they collected just one first place finish from Ben Beardsley, as he split the honor with Houghton Academy’s Henry Sardina in the 200 dash with each recording a 25.5 winning time.

The Lady Eagles would claim a second place finish with five first place finishes setting up victories over both Genesee Valley/Belfast (61-47) and Houghton Academy (78-9). Of those wins, four different Lady Eagles would bring home the medals to pair with their winning 1600 relay. From the track, Ava Sylvester and Grace Russell swept the distance events with triumphs in the 1500 and 3000 runs. On the hurdles was Rachel Hatch, as she crossed the finish line first in the 100 hurdles.

From the field, Hope Russell finished off the collection for the Lady Eagles with a winning distance in the triple jump.
