State wrestling championships come to an end, Sibble, deJesus-Remchuck reach finals, Woodward takes third, Layfield, others, place

Wrestlers from the Southern Tier had a solid weekend representing Section V at the New York State Championships at the MVP Arena in Albany.

Canisteo-Greenwood senior Xavier Dejesus-Remchuk (49-5) had the #2 seed and showed why he deserved it as he picked up wins of 14-0, 5-4 and 2-1 in the semi-finals.

In the finals against #1 seed Gianni Silvestri (42-1) of Tioga (Section IV), Silvestri picked up a 12-3 victory.

Bolivar-Richburg junior Trent Sibble, the #2 seed at 215, lost a thrilling overtime match to #1 seed Sam Sorenson of Section III Homer, 2-1

In the first 30 second overtime, Sorenson had an escape for one point. In the second overtime, Sibble started on the bottom and ran out of time hitting a reversal that would have resulted in two points and the win.

Sorenson finishes the season 50-0 and Sibble, who was seeded #7, is 54-1.

Canisteo-Greenwood sophomore Braidon Woodward made a statement by taking third place at 152. He lost to Alexander’s Mitch Gaiser, 2-1 and Gaiser then lost 2-1 in the state finals.

Woodward kept going, winning four more matches including a 5-2 win over #1 seed Vandavian Way for third place in the consolation finals.

Woodward finishes the season 55-5.

At 126, Hornell senior Mason Drew won his final match, 8-3 over Dylan Devine of Schalmont to take 7th place and make the podium.

Wellsville’s John Layfield at 189 also made the podium with an eighth place finish. He went 2-2 at states and finishes his senior season with a 40-6 record.

Canisteo-Greenwood’s Gavin Bob has a win by pin in the 126 bracket.

Just a freshman, Canisteo-Greenwood’s Colton Havens made the podium has he finished sixth at 132.

Havens finishes the season 52-6 and had two pins in the state championships.

At 138, Bolivar-Richburg sophomore Ethan Coleman had a pin on Saturday afternoon to take home 5th place and a state championship shield. He finished the season 55-7.

At 145, senior Ben Lloyd of Alfred-Almond had a second period pin during states and finishes the season 36-7.

Also at 145, Canisteo-Greenwood sophomore Beau Zeh had a solid tournament and finished the season 43-13. he opened the tournament with a 10-0 win and had a 6-0 win on Saturday. he finished 2-2 at states.

At 160, Gavin Hart of Dansville opened up with a win before his first loss. He won two more matches to finish 3-2 at states.

Also at 160, Letchworth’s Ryleigh Duryee also went 3-2 and finishes his season season 46-6.
