Trout fishing competition in the Genesee River set for April 23 & 24, 2022

After a two year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Wellsville Lions Club is proud to announce the return of a signature springtime event in Allegany County. Anglers from all over the nation will once again flock to the banks of the “Genny” to try and land that big money fish. The Lions made this announcement yesterday on social media:

“The Trout Derby is back! Registration by mail is open and registration can be accomplished at the Wellsville Chamber of Commerce. We will not be using the old web site. You can contact us through the Wellsville Lions Charities Facebook page. See you there!”

As noted, this years derby includes a few minor changes worth mentioning. The first as mentioned above, no online registration and the old website has been scrapped. You can sign up in person at the Wellsville Area Chamber of Commerce on Main Street in Wellsville. Registration forms, available at the end off this article, can be printed and mailed to the address provided. Sign up before April 1 and the derby is only $15. If you wait until after April 1, or even sign up the day of the derby, the fee is $20.

The other big change worth noting is that the derby ends at 3pm on Sunday April 24th.

Interested in sponsoring a fish? The support from individuals and businesses is what makes this event a success. Anyone can agree to sponsor a fish, for a range of prize amounts starting at only $25. Like fishing, the sponsorship also has an element of luck: If the fish you sponsor doesn’t get caught, you don’t have to pay!! Sponsored fish are a great way to remember a loved one or promote your business.

Besides the joys of the Genesee River on a spring day, the Lions Club has arranged for FREE CAMPING in Island Park. Camping is only for derby participants and is available starting Wednesday, April 20th. The Lions will also be providing hot food and beverages during derby weekend with a chicken BBQ on Saturday the 23rd for only $15.
