There was a lot of emotion in the Wellsville volleyball gym at the elementary school on Wednesday night as the Lions honored four seniors before a league matchup with Fillmore.
There was a large student section and the athletic Eagles from Fillmore jumped out to an early first set lead.
However, the Lions battled back to take a close Game 1, 25-21 and went on to a 3-1 victory. The scores were 25-21, 25-7, 14-25, 26-24.
For Wellsville (6-4), senior setter Matthew Bittel had 24 assists to go with his 15 service points, eight aces and a kill. Senior Mason Parks had eight kills, six aces and two digs while seniors Luke Zakel and Matthew Carlton each had two kills and two digs.
Wellsville 8th-grader Xavier Scott had a game-high 10 kills, 10 service points, four aces, three digs and a block.
Fillmore’s Kaleb Tinch served for nine points while Kyle Paulsen had five points and Aiden Wagner had four points and two aces.
Wellsville will try to keep the win streak going today (Thursday) as they host Genesee Valley and then host Bolivar-Richburg on Tuesday, Jan. 25. All games are at 6 p.m.
