Shoppers were surprised today to see Giant Food Mart in Wellsville and Cuba closed at 3 p.m.
A manager at the Wellsville location said the stores were sold. An employee at the Cuba location also confirmed they were closed.
The Wellsville employee said there are employees working today in both locations doing inventory for the new owners and the store will re-open Monday morning.
Cuba store employees also confirmed they will open Monday morning.
It is not known is Park Plaza Liquors is part of the initial sale. Park Plaza in Wellsville was open after the grocery stores closed today.
Not only has Giant Food Mart provided a service and employment for residents over the years, the store has been an active community partner, donating to several groups and employees annually had 100% participation in the United Way campaign.
The late John Berardi owned the store and his sons, Michael and Chris, owned the stores in Wellsville and Cuba, respectively.
Giant Food Mart’s inserts and liquor store ads were the reason the Allegany County Pennysaver was delivered each week for decades. When the Wellsville Daily Reporter and the Pennysaver closed the doors, the Olean Times Herald picked up the inserts and it’s part of a zoned mailing called Allegany Source. It’s not known if that will continue as well.
