When you look at what the Wellsville Sea Lions have accomplished over the past two years, it’s quite impressive. Back-to-back Section V titles going against the largest schools any Wellsville team in any sport has to face. Another perfect regular season (this year 10-0) with six victories over larger LCAA schools to win a title and then winning sectionals over 11 other teams. A good team puts in the work during the season and in the off-season. A great team recognizes it’s more than that.
To understand, just talk to the athletes on the team. Junior Tiernee Brandes had plenty of reason to celebrate with a sectional individual victory in the 100-yard backstroke and part of the school-record and sectional title winning 200 yard medley relay team. However, she was thinking about the out-going senior class and the memories that were made to get to this point instead.
“We are going to miss the seniors,” Brandes said. “We have so many talented underclassmen and I can’t wait until next year, it’s going to be a good year, but it’s going to be hard without the seniors.”
She then talked about the family culture that is the Wellsville Sea Lions.
“Winning individually is great, but is a lot better when you are with everybody. Like the relay, to celebrate it together, it’s more enjoyable to win with the team,” Brandes said. “I enjoy practicing. It’s the team, the coaches … everybody wants to show up for practices. It’s the relationship we have with each other. Even the parents bringing us to practice, it’s everything, it’s enjoyable.”
After winning a Section V title, the team was able to take part in a fire truck parade thanks to volunteers from the Wellsville Fire Department. Last year with Covid restrictions, the team was relegated to screaming out the windows of a bus.
“That was so fun on the fire truck ride, it’s something we didn’t get a chance to do,” Brandes said. “We were ducking branches, but it was so much fun.”
To win, Wellsville had to come from behind to beat Pal-Mac. Other perennial powerhouses like Livonia were in the mix as well. But the Sea Lions started the meet strong and ended strong.
“Last year being a Covid year we didn’t have our fans in the stands and we had an easier win as our rivals in sectionals, Pal-Mac, didn’t bring their full team because of Covid.” Coach Steve Hand said. “But this year, everyone brought their full staff and out of 21 on our team, 17 scored points in sectionals. We have never had all of our swimmers who qualified score points (the previous record was 13), so it was pretty neat to have 17 get all the points! First there was the strong start. “The very first race, the way we started out to win the 200 medley relay, Pal-Mac was seeded ahead of us by four seconds and we stepped up with a 1:59 flat which broke our own school record,” Hand said. “It set the precedent for the whole meet. I could tell their entire team got let down. They knew in order to beat us, they had to win all three relays and it was the dagger we needed to get momentum and keep going from there.”
Pal-Mac didn’t let off the gas. They kept coming at the Sea Lions. But again, this is a team where everyone contributes. Clutch points came from Kennedy Ewing, Isabelle Hart, Kaelyn Crawford and Kaylee Oswald in the 400 freestyle relay when they placed in third. Before that, Morgan Mattison’s points from second and third place in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle along with Hayden Waldon’s two second place finishes in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle put Wellsville back near the lead. Grace Kinnicutt’s points in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke helped take a lead. Then the relay teams added to those totals.
The points kept coming. Ellie LaBenne’s personal best in the 500 freestyle came in. The coaches smiled. Emily Budinger picked up points, Reegan Perkins had an outstanding finish in the 500 for points. In the 100, Morgan Oswald and Kaylee Oswald picked up points. To add to the relay success, individually, Crawford and Hart added to the winning total. When it ended, Wellsville had 438 points to beat Pal-Mac and Livonia.
For years, the barometer of a season was to try to compete with those teams. For two years in a row, Wellsville has now come out on top. “The girls in the 200 free just kept the ball rolling. Hayden broke our school record in the 200 IM, Morgan Mattison had an outstanding performance in the 50 free. Both of our divers (Ashley and Kaylee Oswald in the Championship Diving meet scored key points) on the previous Friday went up there and dove outstanding and they have dove outstanding all year,” Hand said. “Grace Kinnicutt, Isabelle Hart, Kaelyn Crawford and Cameron Gordon, they gained us a ton of points in the 100 Butterfly and that’s exactly what we needed to even things out. As for the rest of the girls, they kept pushing and did what they had to do to pull it off.”
Hand then climbed the ladder and started changing out numbers, names and times on the large record board at the Wellsville pool. “We’ve changed some records and we got the number 21 (as in 2021) up there and we want some more up there in the next couple of years,” Hand said. “We want to get some swimmers to the state meet and defend our sectional title. It’s sad that it’s over, and that we have to say goodbye to five seniors that have really shaped and built our team to what it is now. This team was incredible, and everyone’s support around the community has been amazing all season long, and it’s helped us to get to where we are now. We are definitely not going to stop here.”
Hand said the team swims five days a week during the season and still stays active in the off-season thanks to clubs like the Genesee Valley Aqua Jags, which gets a lot of younger kids interested in swimming. “Swimming is a sport where if you take a break from it, your body takes a break from it. Most of these girls swim all year round. Some swim for the Aqua Jags, some swim out of a club team out of Bradford, Pa,” he said. “We swim five days a week for three hours and two hours on Saturday. In the off-season we go to the gym and still swim three days a week. This year we swam to Toronto and back and to Buffalo and Back, so we put some miles on the girls this year!”
