Wellsville football season paused with Covid cases

Senior night on Saturday against Canisteo-Greenwood has been canceled as well as the final home game of the season against C.G. Finney for the Wellsville Lions football team.

Covid exposures will halt the season for the red-hot Lions, who won three straight games and are sitting as the No. 4 team in Section V heading into playoffs.

The team was notified today they are able to start practice again on Oct. 24.

Currently, Wellsville is sitting in fourth place and would host a sectional game. However, Lyons/Sodus (3-1) and Canisteo-Greenwood (2-2) face off on Friday, Oct. 22 and one team could jump ahead of Wellsville.

The top team is defending champion Red Jacket at 4-0 with Pembroke at 3-1 and Frewsburg at 3-0. Wellsville, at 3-3, has more points than other schools because of more games played at this point. Only one other school (C.G Finney/Northstar, 1-5) has played six games. Wellsville defeated Finney in Rochester earlier this season.
