The family of a Bolivar man who died after a house explosion Saturday has set up a GoFundMe.

Family members said Mike Church died and he leaves behind his wife, Dixie Church and children Andrew and Chelsea.

At 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, Amity-based State Police said they were dispatched to, “A possible house fire/explosion on County Route 18 in the town of Alma.  The residence is completely demolished/engulfed.” Troopers said the NYSP Bureau of Criminal Investigation and multiple fire departments were on scene for over 12 hours.

The GoFundMe Page was set up by Caitlin Brooks who posted about the family.

“As some of you may know, my Aunt Dixie Church has lost her beloved husband Mike when their house was unexpectedly destroyed by a gas explosion while he was home alone on October 2,” Caitlin writes. “Along with his wife Dixie, Mike leaves behind his son Andrew and daughter Chelsea. Many people in the community knew Mike as a kind and caring man, and our family was very lucky to have him part of so many happy memories. Mike and Dixie have always been there for anyone in need, with a smile on their faces and likely a few jokes along the way, too.

“There will be many expenses to the family, as Dixie has not only lost her husband, but their home and any and all possessions. Please consider a donation to help offset the upcoming expenses. Any amount you can give is much appreciated, along with your prayers. Thank you,” Caitlin added.

On Saturday at 5:17 p.m., troopers called a coroner to the scene.

An investigation is continuing. A contractor familiar with the home said the area has old gas wells that go into the home but are not used. While gas can be switched to a company for gas, there is a possibility the old gas well can leak.
