As one local school employee vented on social media, “guess I’m going to be singing the entire day at work!” The frustration is echoed by many parents and students who are upset that the new guidance is more restrictive than last year. For example, the 2019-2020 school year guidance allowed students and staff to unmask while seated at a desk. This year students and staff must be fully masked unless eating, drinking, singing, or playing an instrument. Vaccination status does not impact the mask guidance, everyone must adhere to the new rules.
For those faculty and staff who have not, or will not get the vaccination, New York will require those employees to take weekly Covid tests in order to continue employment.
Governor Hochul has defended the increased restrictions as a key tool for keeping schools open and in person for this school year. Read the full document below.
