Two county DPW workers being treated for smoke exposure, The landfill is closed until further notice

At 9:09 am, the Allegany County Sheriffs Office 91 1 Center received a call reporting a hazardous materials incident in a dumpster at the Allegany County Landfill located at 6006 County Rd. 48, Town of Angelica. It was reported that there was a chemical reaction in the dumpster producing a small amount of smoke. The origin and type of the hazardous materials are unknown.
Emergency personnel including Angelica and Belmont Fire Departments, Medical Transport
Services, Allegany County Sheriffs Office, AC Sheriffs Office Drone Team, NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation, NYS DEC Spill Response, Allegany County Haz Mat, Allegany County Emergency Management and Allegany County DPW, all responded to the scene. The incident location was isolated and a perimeter established. Two individuals were transported to a local hospital by EMS for exposure to the smoke.
The incident is on-going and the investigation is continuing. County Road 48 is currently open to traffic. The landfill is closed until further notice per DPW Superintendent Tom Windus. The public is asked to avoid the area to reduce traffic congestion. There is no perceived threat to the public at this time.
