The Wellsville girls’ soccer program is off to one of the best starts in years with a 3-0 record thanks to a big 2-0 shutout of Fillmore.
The win — on paper — is a Class B team defeating a Class D team. However, the Fillmore soccer program is recognized as one of the best in the state, boys and girls.
It’s a testament to the outstanding athletes and coaching in Fillmore over the recent years, which is why beating the Eagles has become a statement win for any program, any classification.
Wellsville came into the game with huge wins, 3-2 over Naples and 2-1 over Wayland-Cohocton.
In the win over Fillmore on Tuesday night, Wellsville sophomore Lexi Griggs had the shutout in goal, turning away 12 shots.
Abby Willson scored on an assist from Olivia Bowen and Emily Stuck scored on an assist from Addy Hennessy.
Fillmore goalie Kelsie Songster had 11 saves.
In the JV game, Wellsville defeated Fillmore, 1-0.
Wellsville is off for a week then hosts Canisteo-Greenwood on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
There will be a lot of action on Friday, Sept. 18, as the girls host Genesee Valley-Belfast on the grass at 5 p.m. and th football team, which is Wellsville and Genesee Valley-Belfast, hosts Letchworth-Warsaw at 7 p.m.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
The Wellsville girls’ volleyball team (JV and varsity) is now playing at the high school and the two teams opened with wins on Tuesday night.
The JV team won, 3-0 over Hinsdale and the varsity team broke a 1-1 tie with two wins to defeat Hinsdale, 3-1.
The win was the first career varsity win for new coach Kelly Vossler.
