Wellsville’s Trenton Green hit a home run and got the win on the mound, striking out eight in five innings as No. 2 Wellsville downed No. 7 Bishop Kearney/Chesterton/Archangel, 7-5 on Sunday in Wellsville.

With the win, Wellsville advances to the semi-finals of the Section V Class B2 playoffs.

BK had a 5-3 lead in the 5th when Green hit a solo home run, then Paul Giovanniello drilled a 3-RBI double for the 7-5 lead. Neither team would score again.

Matt Ritter (RBI), Andrew Ordiway (RBI, run stolen base), Ty Rahr (RBI), all had hits while Brennen Geffers had a RBI. Drew Cowburn scored two runs and stole two bases and Green stole two bases and scored twice for Wellsville (12-7).

“Bishop Kearney is a good hitting team 1-9 in the lineup and their coaching staff had them ready today,” said Wellsville coach John Anderson. “It was tough for them to turn around and play us on two days’ rest, but their pitchers did a nice job and they made some tremendous plays in the field.”

Henry Collins had two hits for BK while Anthony Ortiz (double), Garrett Rupp, Augustine Valentini, Athan Valentini, Jackson Stevens and Connor Marks all had hits.

Wellsville will host Bolivar-Richburg/Cuba-Rushford/Parker Jordan on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Wellsville.

“This is going to be very exciting for fans of both communities who are used to driving 90 minutes for semifinal games!” said Anderson. “It’s a strange one for (BRCR coach) Dustin Allen and I because we are always helping each other win sectionals in our respective classes. One year, Wellsville, B-R and C-R all won sectionals the same year. With their merge, they are in our class, and we played one game this season and needed to score in the bottom of the seventh to beat them 4-3. They have great coaches, our players all know each other and it’s going to be one of the biggest crowds at Wellsville in a long time.”
