Baseball: Wellsville 4-3 win in 8 innings over B-R/C-R on Tuesday night

Cowburn strikes out seven in-a-row for 4-3 win in extra innings

Wellsville freshman Drew Cowburn struck out eight in three innings of relief without giving up a hit or run as Wellsville downed Bolivar-Richburg/Cuba-Rushford, 4-3 in eight innings Tuesday. Cowburn improved to 3-0 on the season and faced 10 batters, striking out seven in a row and getting a groundout and gave up one walk.

B-R/C-R/Parker Jordan tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth. In the bottom of the eighth, Wellsville junior Anthony Button hit a one-out triple and Paul Giovanniello’s long sacrifice fly to center scored Button who tagged up for the winning run.

Wellsville senior Trenton Green blasted a home run while Matt Ritter was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored, Ben Helveston had two hits and a RBI, Button had two hits and scored twice and Giovanniello had a hit.

In addition to his triple and two hits, Button went five innings, striking out six with one walk, giving up five hits and three runs, one earned.

For B-R/C-R, Hayden Schappicher struck out three in 3.1 innings. At the plate, he had a run and walk. Chase Haas gave up just one run and struck out three, pitching 3.2 innings.

At the plate, Braxton Clark had two hits and scored a run, Mason Baldwin had a RBI single and scored, Carson Schunk had a RBI single, Ryder Iantorno had a RBI and reached base.

Both teams are in action this Friday and Saturday in the Bolivar-Richburg tournament. Wellsville faces Arkport-Canaseraga in the first game at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The host school takes on Otto-Eldred at 7 p.m. and Saturday, games are at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
