The Wellsville Lady Lions celebrated a hard-fought 49–46 home victory over Andover-Whitesville on Monday night, Feb. 9, using a strong fourth-quarter push to secure the win.
Andover-Whitesville controlled the early pace, jumping out to an 11–6 lead after the first quarter and holding a 28–21 advantage at halftime. Wellsville responded after the break, tightening up defensively and cutting into the deficit, but still trailed 37–29 heading into the final period.
The Lions saved their best basketball for last.
Wellsville erupted for 20 points in the fourth quarter, outscoring Andover-Whitesville 20–18 down the stretch to complete the comeback and seal the three-point win.
Emily Stuck led the Lions with 16 points, knocking down timely shots and converting at the free-throw line in the closing minutes. Lydia Kaye added 8 points, 7 rebounds, and steady interior play, while Reagan Vogel chipped in 7 points, 7 rebounds, and strong defense. Jayden Dunbar also contributed 8 points, including key free throws late.
Wellsville finished 17-for-29 from the free-throw line, a critical edge in a tightly contested game, and won the rebounding battle 38–29, helping offset Andover-Whitesville’s early shooting success.
Andover-Whitesville was led by balanced scoring but struggled to slow the Lions’ late surge, going 10-for-20 from the line and committing 14 turnovers.
With the win, Wellsville showed resilience and composure, turning a sluggish start into a strong finish in front of the home crowd and closing the night with momentum heading into upcoming home games against CG Finney and Fillmore.
Head Coach Drew Toney:
“Hard fought game tonight, they really made us work on both ends every possession. AW’s Bledsoe and Waters both played really hard down low and that gave us problems. We had so many different girls step up at different times. Stuck getting 16 was big for us offensively and Kaye coming in off the bench for 7 in the first half kept us afloat. Our defensive intensity never wavered and that paid off in the end.”
