ALMOND — The community Christmas season will begin “officially” on Sunday afternoon, December7, when the Almond Historical Society (AHS) and Almond Community Church collaborate for their annual Christmas musical program and the Hagadorn House museum Open House.

The event holds special significance this year as the Almond Historical Society is also celebrating its 60th birthday, marking six decades of preserving local history since its charter in 1965.

The holiday festivities run from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the beautifully decorated 1830s Hagadorn House, with cookies and hot wassail served throughout the afternoon.  A musical program will be presented at 2:00 p.m. next door at Almond Community Church featuring traditional Christmas carol singing, songs by the Almond Home School Academy children, and performances by special musical and dance groups. The Quintet Six brass ensemble will present an opening prelude and a special number during the service.

The Hagadorn House, located at the corner of Main Street and Karrdale Ave (at the red light), is a treasure trove of Almond’s 200+ year history. For the holidays, it will be adorned with natural greeneries and vintage ornaments from the House collection.  A large Christmas tree, decorated by the Home School Academy children, will grace the front parlor. Visitors can  admire the updated kitchen and refinished plank floors in the parlors and Linn Phelan gallery.   Artifacts on display include:

  • Ken Hagadorn’s desk from the Post Office, where he served as postmaster and rural mail carrier.
  • The cooking fireplace rediscovered behind a wall in the 1940s.
  • The typewriter used by John Reynolds to create his book, “The Almond Story.”
  • Leather fire bucket owned by Moses Van Campen, Revolutionary war soldier, surveyor, and pioneer in Almond’s settlement in 1796
