Access to the Genesee River and Ecotourism in Allegany County
From Nora Burdick, Monday Club Publicist
Rebecca Rowley, Executive Director of the Genesee River Wilds discovered firsthand that our picturesque Genesee River was a peaceful place to be on a sunny day, however exiting the river was a challenge for two young women with hot pink donut floats. The need for access points to the river was noted by the pair and a resolve to be part of the solution was the result.

Rebecca became part of the Genesee River Wilds initiative and continues to support the mission to restore, protect and enjoy the upper Genesee River by combining conservation, recreation and business.
The first meeting of the Genesee River Wilds was held in 2008, nearly twenty years ago. The initiative established a Board of Directors and partnered with several like-minded organizations, including, but not limited to: Genesee Valley Greenway, Allegheny Trails, Upper Genesee Trail Ways, Finger Lakes Trail, local outfitters, conservation agencies and tourism promoters, to name a few. After all, big things can be accomplished when we collaborate with others to support a cause. The old cliche rings loudly, many hands make light work.
The Genesee River Wilds vision includes partnerships with additional advocates dedicated to a healthy and sustainable ecological environment and a surge in regional ecotourism. Naturally, tourists shop local businesses, eat in restaurants, stay in the area and boost the economy for all. New possibilities are endless; triathlon, themed guided floats, think birding, historical, geological, fly-fishing clinics, camping/amenities, kayaking, and beyond our wildest dreams. We need to think outside, and when we do our volunteer fire departments, high school sports teams, local charities, and more benefit.
Watch for river access points from Wellsville to Portageville. Start planning your next adventure.
