From the Office of Congressman Langworthy,

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Nick Langworthy joined fellow members of New York’s Republican congressional delegation in sending a letter to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, demanding they end their partisan obstruction and vote to immediately reopen the federal government.

In the letter, led by Congressman Michael Lawler (NY-17), the delegation condemned Schumer and Gillibrand for reversing their long-held positions on avoiding government shutdowns and prioritizing partisan politics over the needs of hardworking New Yorkers.

“Senator Schumer and Senator Gillibrand must have amnesia because they have both spent decades in Washington preaching about the dangers of shutdowns,” said Congressman Nick Langworthy. “They are consumed with their hatred for President Trump and they don’t care that they’re using New Yorkers as hostages in their political games. “They shut the government down to appease the resist crowd, while our troops, federal workers, and small businesses suffer. It’s time to stop this nonsense and do what’s right for the people they’re supposed to represent.”

The letter highlights past statements from both senators condemning shutdowns as reckless and harmful — including Schumer’s 2013 comments calling them “politics of idiocracy” and Gillibrand’s 2019 warning that shutdowns “hurt our military families and cost taxpayers millions.” Senators Schumer and Gillibrand have voted 8 times to keep the government shut down.

Congressman Langworthy and his colleagues urged Schumer and Gillibrand to stop political grandstanding, join bipartisan efforts to reopen the government, and support the continued funding of vital programs like the Rural Health Transformation Fund, which provides critical resources to hospitals and healthcare providers across upstate New York.

Congressman Langworthy concluded,” Schumer and Gillibrand have spent far too long in the Washington bubble because they’ve forgotten they work for all New Yorkers, not the professional agitators whose sole mission in life is to obstruct President Trump. My message is simple: stop the games and do your job.”
