Did you know that New York State will celebrate the 200th birthday of the Erie Canal this fall?  You’re not alone if you don’t.

On September 24th you’ll have the opportunity to learn more about this important waterway and its place in both state and national history. The Andover Historical Society is sponsoring a special two-part event in honor of that birthday celebration.

The first part will be a presentation by retired Allegany County Historian Craig Braack concerning those responsible for the conception and implementation of New York’s famed “road to the West”. This engineering feat connected New York City to Buffalo and all points farther west, starting with its completion in 1825. Craig’s talk will be given at 5:00pm in the Andover Historical Society Museum on East Greenwood Street.

At 6:30pm at Eagle Park next to the AHS Museum, a salute to the Erie Canal by a “banjo-slingin’, guitar-pickin’ time-travelin’ musical and storytelling time” show featuring Jethro and Caleb, the “Biscuit Brothers” will be offered.  Having performed throughout Western New York, the Andover Historical Society is both pleased and proud to have them entertain us in Andover. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the evening.

In the event of inclement weather, both events will take place in the AHS Museum. Light refreshments of biscuits and honey (in keeping with the theme) will be served at no cost, but donations would be gratefully accepted.
